The UK's Leading Independent Martial Arts Association

Tackling Knife Crime Through Martial Arts — Not Violence

#DitchTheBlade is BMABA’s national initiative using trauma-informed martial arts to engage, mentor, and protect young people at risk of serious youth violence.

#DITCHTHEBLADE

Using Martial Arts to Interrupt Violence, Not Glorify It

The #DitchTheBlade initiative isn’t about unrealistic, combative “knife defence” techniques. It’s about something far more powerful — using martial arts as a tool of connection, mentorship, and positive identity for young people most at risk of serious youth violence.

Our approach recognises that martial arts instructors often hold the kind of community credibility and trusted presence that few services can replicate. In clubs across the UK — especially those in under-resourced or marginalised areas — these instructors are already playing a vital role in keeping young people engaged, grounded, and safe. We’ve created a framework to formalise and strengthen that impact.

What the Programme Does

#DitchTheBlade trains and equips BMABA-affiliated clubs to proactively engage young people affected by, or vulnerable to, knife crime. All participating clubs:

  • Are Regulation Ready certified, meeting strict safeguarding, DBS, and compliance standards

  • Have completed our SYV (Serious Youth Violence) training, covering key issues such as:

    • County lines exploitation

    • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

    • Community marginalisation

    • Trauma-informed coaching methods

    • Poverty and risk factors leading to disaffection

We don’t teach kids how to fight knives. We teach clubs how to reach kids before they ever pick one up.

Through specialist classes, open mat sessions, community engagement programmes and one-to-one mentoring, participating instructors use martial arts to create safe spaces, positive identity, structure, and trust. This helps counter the sense of hopelessness or fear that often fuels youth violence.

Not Knife Defence. Violence Prevention.

There are no fantasy scenarios here. We don’t promote dangerous or irresponsible “knife disarms.” Instead, we invest in what works:

  • Long-term relationships with trusted mentors

  • Positive reinforcement and discipline through martial arts

  • Trauma-aware environments that respect lived experience

  • Early engagement that diverts young people from risk before it escalates

Our goal is not to teach survival in a knife fight. It’s to help ensure young people never end up in one.

"I thought I'd probably be dead by twenty, or serving life in prison. Judo turned my life around and made me see how bloody stupid carrying a knife really is."

"When all of your friends are tooled up, you just do it too because it seems like it's the only way to stay safe. The sad reality is that most of it stems from fear. Our school had done talks on knife crime before and I had even taken part in a few 'activator' sessions for Tennis and Cricket, but it just doesn't cut it. The problem with that way of life is it's about the macho image and all of the culture. It's hard to rise above that. Judo showed me there's always someone out there who can take you down. It also taught me the importance of discipline and self-control. It's the first thing in my life I've stuck at and achieved, and after four years, I'm a black belt. I don't think I'll ever be as proud of anything else in my life. The fact my training was linked to my schooling forced me to engage.
