MANtra: Martial Arts for Men’s Mental Health

Train hard. Talk honestly. Support quietly.
A national initiative creating safe, trauma-informed spaces in martial arts where men can connect, open up, and find real support — without judgement, pressure, or stigma.

A Safe Place To Train. A Quiet Space To Talk.

MANtra is BMABA’s national male mental health initiative, using martial arts as a tool for connection, conversation, and quiet strength. Built around the understanding that men often struggle to open up, especially in traditional settings, MANtra creates safe, trauma-informed environments where men can train, talk — or simply be — without judgement or pressure.

We recognise the stark reality behind the statistics: men account for three-quarters of all suicides in the UK. Many are isolated, struggling in silence, or left without support. We also recognise the unique environment martial arts provides — one built on respect, routine, and trusted male role models. Within these clubs, change is possible.

Martial Arts Can Open Doors Where Words Can’t

Our vision is simple: to use martial arts as a gateway — not a solution, but a starting point. A place where men can feel seen, supported, and included without needing to announce their pain or justify their presence. It’s not about therapy on the mats. It’s about creating a safe space where help feels natural, not forced.

The clubs delivering MANtra sessions don’t treat mental health. Instead, they make space for it — training as usual, but with awareness, respect, and readiness. Conversations happen when they need to. Signposting happens when it matters most. And BMABA stands behind each participating club with qualified support, structure, and crisis access.

High Standards. Trusted Coaches. Real Support.

Every MANtra club must meet strict minimum standards to protect members and deliver safe, supportive sessions. This includes:

  • Regulation Ready certification (Bronze level or higher)

  • BMABA-certified Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training

  • Trauma-Informed Coaching qualification, specific to martial arts contexts

These standards ensure instructors are equipped not just to run a club — but to notice the signs, hold space for quiet conversations, and know when and how to direct someone to appropriate professional help.

When immediate support is needed, BMABA can arrange direct access to qualified therapy for those in urgent need. This keeps martial arts clubs as a bridge, not a burden — and ensures no man is left behind simply because he didn’t know where to turn.

Redefining Strength

Martial arts teaches discipline, control, and resilience — but also humility, community, and vulnerability. With the right support, we believe our clubs can help rewrite the narrative around masculinity and mental health. One quiet conversation at a time.
