LADO & Policy Martial Arts Safeguarding Advice

Understanding Safeguarding in UK Martial Arts

Martial arts in the UK operate in an unregulated environment, meaning there is no legal requirement for instructors or clubs to be registered with any governing body or association. This lack of statutory oversight presents challenges for safeguarding professionals such as LADOs (Local Authority Designated Officers), police services, and other child protection specialists when investigating concerns within martial arts settings.

Despite this, most credible and responsible martial arts instructors and clubs choose to affiliate with a recognised body that provides governance, safeguarding guidance, and best practice standards.

About BMABA & Our Safeguarding Commitment

The British Martial Arts & Boxing Association (BMABA) is a Community Interest Company (CIC) registered and recognised to the highest standards in UK martial arts. We work closely with SCiMA (the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts) and are the only independent martial arts association with a dedicated safeguarding and compliance unit. This ensures we can provide unparalleled safeguarding leadership and support to our affiliated clubs and instructors.

We take all safeguarding concerns extremely seriously, and any club or instructor registered with us can be verified at bmaba.org.uk/verify.

What We Can & Cannot Do

BMABA can only take formal action when an instructor or club is licensed by us. This includes investigations, compliance checks, and safeguarding interventions. However, even in cases where an instructor is not affiliated with BMABA, we are happy to provide free guidance and consultation to professionals needing advice.

If an instructor or club is not registered with BMABA, we will assist in identifying the appropriate governing body or association, where applicable, to ensure safeguarding concerns are escalated appropriately.

Best Practice in Martial Arts Safeguarding

While martial arts are unregulated, best practice dictates that instructors should:

  • Hold an enhanced DBS check
  • Have appropriate safeguarding training
  • Follow a clear safeguarding policy
  • Be affiliated with a reputable association or governing body
  • Maintain insurance coverage

Our National Safeguarding Policy provides further detail on the high standards we uphold.
