Why Evidence Matters in Martial Arts

At BMABA, we believe credible, ethical martial arts instruction can only succeed when guided by more than tradition alone. That’s why we’ve embedded research and evidence-led practice into the core of our strategy, using real-world data, instructor insights and public feedback to shape policy, inform guidance and set national standards.

We work in a sector that has long operated on fragmented opinion and informal governance. But as martial arts continues to grow, particularly among children, vulnerable adults and underserved communities, we believe the time has come for evidence to lead the way.

Gathering Insight From Those Who Know Best

Our national membership represents thousands of instructors and clubs across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This unparalleled access allows us to collect, analyse and learn from frontline experience, through regular national surveys, anonymised safety audits, and feedback loops with clubs and students alike.

Whether it’s understanding barriers to participation, measuring perceptions of club safety, exploring diversity in coaching leadership, or tracking instructor CPD engagement, we use data to identify trends, uncover risks, and tailor support where it’s most needed. We research beyond the industry too, working with parents, students, schools and stakeholders to understand what trust and safety look like from a community perspective, so our work is grounded in reality, not assumptions.

This work now operates at national scale. Our sector-wide research programme, including structural analysis of UK combat sports participation, workforce and governance, puts hard data behind the questions the sector has debated on instinct for decades, and it’s increasingly informing our engagement with national bodies and government.

Academic Rigour, Built In

We’re determined that martial arts research should meet the standards of any other field, so we’re building the structures to make that possible.

Our Scientific Advisory Panel brings qualified academics and researchers into BMABA’s work: co-developing research questions, strengthening our methodology, and holding our evidence to the standards their disciplines expect. We engage directly with the academic community, from universities to sector researchers, and we welcome collaboration wherever it advances safer, better-understood martial arts.

Every dataset we hold sits within an information security management system certified to ISO 27001:2022 under UKAS accreditation, because research participants and members deserve to know their data is governed to the highest independently audited standard in the UK.

Putting Research Into Action

Insight is only valuable if it leads to impact. We don’t publish reports for the sake of it. We use data to directly shape the frameworks, training and policy that support safer, more inclusive practice:

• Trauma-Informed Coaching: Social research, ACE (Adverse Childhood Experience) data and education sector studies shape our national qualification in trauma-informed martial arts instruction, ensuring instructors understand the psychological context of behaviour, learning and emotional regulation.
• Serious Youth Violence (SYV): Our CPD programme tackling knife crime and youth violence is shaped by field-level insight and academic research, including cross-sector learning from social work, education and policing.
• Disability Inclusion & SEND: Member data and SEND case studies shaped our specialist SEND Level 1 (Practitioner) and SEND Level 2 (Co-ordinator) qualifications, better supporting neurodivergent students and those with learning or physical disabilities.
• Safeguarding Standards: We regularly review incident reports, conduct trend analysis, and benchmark against national and international guidance to continually refine our safeguarding protocols, minimum expectations and vetting requirements.
• Concussion & Head Injury Management: Clinical guidelines and sport safety data shape our CHIMA Award and our digital Return to Play system, giving clubs evidence-backed tools for student safety.

Leading Change with Credibility

Our approach to evidence-led practice isn’t just internal. It’s formalised and independently recognised. BMABA is listed on the UK Register of Learning Providers (UKRLP), certified by The CPD Group, and a CIMSPA Training Provider Partner, with our qualifications developed in line with professional standards for the sport and physical activity workforce. We’re also actively working towards an RQF-aligned national qualification under the Regulated Qualifications Framework, a milestone that would mark a new era of formally recognised, evidence-based professionalism for martial arts instructors.
