A Parent’s Guide to Safeguarding

Martial arts isn’t regulated, so it’s important you know what — and who — you’re signing your child up to.

The Reality of Safeguarding in Martial Arts

Unlike school sports or national governing body programmes, martial arts in the UK is not formally regulated. That means anyone — regardless of qualifications, safeguarding training, or even criminal history — can set themselves up as an instructor. This lack of oversight creates serious risks, especially when children or vulnerable adults are involved.

Too often, parents assume that just because a club looks established, or an instructor is confident and charismatic, they must be fully qualified and safe. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. In some instances, safeguarding failures, lack of training, or even outright abuse have gone unchecked — simply because no one was actively vetting the instructor.

That’s why you can never take an instructor’s word for it, and why doing your own checks is not just acceptable — it’s essential.

What Every Parent Should Be Asking

When assessing a martial arts club, we recommend asking questions around three key areas:

Technical Competency

Does the lead instructor — and their coaching team — hold valid, recognised qualifications in the style they’re teaching? Have they provided evidence of their grade or rank? A good instructor will be proud to show you their credentials and won’t be evasive about where they trained or who awarded their qualifications.

Professionalism

How does the club present itself? Is the website clear and professional? Are communications respectful, timely, and informative? How does the instructor interact with you and your child in person? A reputable club should behave like any professional youth service — with clarity, structure, and respect.

Safeguarding & Best Practice

Do they have an up-to-date safeguarding policy? Are instructors DBS-checked and trained in safeguarding? Who is their Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), and how would a concern be handled if raised? If they don’t have answers — or seem defensive when asked — that’s a red flag.

How BMABA Makes It Easier for Parents

Choosing a BMABA-registered club gives parents the ability to take much of the guesswork out of the process.

BMABA is ISO 9001:2015 UKAS-certified, with the most robust compliance, vetting, and safeguarding standards in martial arts. Every instructor must provide verified proof of their qualifications and grade to gain membership — and we don’t stop there. Once they’re members, we require continuous compliance with our Regulation Ready framework, which covers safeguarding, insurance, risk assessments, DBS checks, and more.

Our internal vetting system — called IVY — continuously monitors for concerns across safeguarding, ethics, compliance, and instructor conduct. Every instructor and club is held to account, and our live online verification tool allows parents to instantly check a club’s membership status, DBS checks, safeguarding qualifications, insurance, and more in real-time.

Trust Your Instinct — and Ask Questions

Ultimately, you should never take someone’s word for it — no matter how friendly or experienced they seem. Good clubs won’t just tolerate questions, they’ll welcome them. They’ll be keen to show you their paperwork, explain their safeguarding process, and reassure you of the steps they take to keep your child safe.

If something doesn’t feel right — if an instructor seems vague, defensive, or uninterested in your concerns — trust your gut and look elsewhere. Safeguarding is non-negotiable. And when it comes to your child’s wellbeing, no question is too small to ask.
