Our mission

We're built on the fundamental belief that martial arts has the power to bring communities together and transform lives.

Boosting Grassroots Participation

We want to see more people of every gender, race, religion and background getting into martial arts, and staying in it. We believe that belongs in grassroots, community driven clubs that are professionally set up, run with accountability, and safeguard children and adults at risk effectively.

Setting Standards Nobody Else Will

UK martial arts still has no regulator, meaning anybody can claim a black belt and start teaching. We’re working to change that, with enhanced vetting, live compliance monitoring and the most sophisticated infrastructure of its kind anywhere in martial arts, all checkable through our public National Register.

Helping Good Clubs Scale

We want good, professional, ethical independent clubs to triumph, and we’ll do everything in our power to make it happen. From resources, tools and guidance through to cutting edge software and services, we’re in clubs’ corners.

Championing Safeguarding

We’ve led the charge on better safeguarding in martial arts for a decade, and we stand today far ahead of the pack in innovation, compliance and sheer drive to make every club the safest place it can be for children and young people.

Being one of the largest associations in UK martial arts means nothing if we’re not making a real difference at club level. We’re focused on being present where it matters most: on the mats.

Freedom

The days of closed committees and old boys’ networks are over. Clubs should be free and independent, while remaining professional and accountable, and we exist to make both possible at once.

Integrity

We hold ourselves and our members to the same standards we learned in the dojo: discipline, respect and integrity. And when someone falls short, we act.

Ambition

On paper, we should never have made it. We’re underdogs, and we’ve seen first hand what ambition and the drive to change can do. We’ll stay ambitious for BMABA, for our clubs, and for the whole of UK martial arts.

The Big Idea

Our model is simple, and it’s now locked in law. Clubs join BMABA because membership is genuinely the best value in martial arts: insurance, tools, technology and support that cost less together than apart. As a Community Interest Company, every pound that generates is reinvested, into better tools for clubs, higher standards for the sector, and programmes that change lives through martial arts. Clubs fund the mission. The mission strengthens clubs. Nobody takes a penny out.
