Does My Martial Arts Club Need a Sport England Recognised NGB?
In an ideal world, every martial arts club would have access to a well-funded, nationally recognised governing body (NGB) — one that provides clear guidance, practical tools, and genuine support for grassroots growth. Where that relationship exists, and where it works for your style and goals, we would always encourage you to make use of it.
This applies equally whether you’re based in England, Wales, or Scotland, where the NGBs recognised by Sport England, Sport Wales, and Sport Scotland respectively play a role in administering participation, funding, and competition pathways for certain styles and disciplines. In general, their focus tends to lean toward sport-centric development — things like talent progression, medals, and Olympic alignment — which is incredibly important in the right setting.
But we also know the reality of the industry.
We’ve been working deep inside UK martial arts since 2012. We understand how disconnected many independent clubs feel — especially those not chasing medals or aligned to a mainstream style. Whether you’re focused on self-defence, traditional systems, modern adaptations, mixed disciplines, or hybrid approaches, it’s entirely possible your club may not find a natural home under a Sport England-recognised NGB. Even where one exists, it may not always feel inclusive or relevant to the way your club operates.
That’s where BMABA comes in.
We’re not a Sport England recognised NGB. And we don’t pretend to be. Whilst we are arguably as well structured and governed than many NGBs out there, we’re a multi-style organisation so we’re broadly ineligible. We’re also deeply focused on grassroots – not elite level competition.
But we are an accountable, professionally governed, not-for-profit governing body for clubs across the UK — one that stands shoulder to shoulder with the best of the sport sector in terms of quality, oversight, and standards.
In fact, we’re the only organisation of our kind in the martial arts sector to be audited and certified by the UKAS-accredited British Assessment Bureau for ISO 9001:2015 — the international gold standard for quality management and governance.
That certification isn’t just a logo on a website. It means our systems, policies, leadership, and organisational conduct have been externally verified to meet the same levels of professionalism you’d expect from major governing bodies in mainstream sport.
We’re Not Asking You To Choose Us Blindly
If you have a recognised NGB available to you, we encourage you to explore them.
Look at their governance, their support offering, their inclusivity. Then compare it with BMABA. Speak with them. Speak with us. Make a decision based on what’s right for your club, your students, and your goals — not based on legacy or branding.
We know some NGBs don’t welcome dual affiliation. We know others might not support clubs unless they fully ‘buy in’. And we know there are countless instructors and schools working ethically, safely, and professionally without any representation at all — simply because there isn’t a recognised body that serves their needs.
We’re here for those clubs. The ones doing things differently. The ones forging their own identity — be it in self-defence, hybrid arts, cross-training, traditional or modern disciplines. Clubs that value autonomy but still want the structure, safeguarding, insurance, governance, and credibility that a professional governing body can offer.
We don’t expect your trust upfront. But we do offer a free membership option so you can test our policies, resources, and systems with no pressure and no commitment.
We’re not trying to be “the alternative”. We’re simply trying to be the right fit for clubs who want to teach with professionalism, passion, and support — regardless of whether they fit the mould of mainstream sport.
If there is a Sport England (or SportWales/SportScotland) recognised NGB for my style, do I have to join them?
No — there is no legal or regulatory requirement that forces martial arts clubs to join a Sport England, Sport Wales, or Sport Scotland recognised National Governing Body (NGB).
That said, where a recognised NGB exists and provides genuine value — clear governance, high standards, practical support, and relevance to your style — it’s absolutely worth considering. If the relationship works for your club, we would encourage you to make the most of it.
But martial arts in the UK is not centrally regulated. Unlike mainstream sports, there’s no law or single authority that says your club must belong to one organisation over another. Instead, the choice of who governs your club — if anyone — is yours to make.
So why do some clubs feel like they must join their NGB?
Often, it’s perception. A Sport-recognised NGB might be presented as the only valid option, especially when entering competitions. And while those NGBs do hold official recognition, that recognition doesn’t invalidate alternatives — especially when those alternatives (like BMABA) offer equivalent or better governance, safeguarding, insurance, and member support.
In fact, some clubs may find that recognised NGBs don’t serve their needs — particularly if they:
> Teach a hybrid, modern, or niche style not well represented by the mainstream
> Focus on self-defence, personal development, or traditional practice over medals
> Need more flexibility or digital innovation in how they run
> Simply want a more transparent, grassroots-orientated partner
At BMABA CIC, we recognise the value of traditional NGBs and we’re not trying to replace them — but we do exist for the many clubs and instructors who fall outside those frameworks.
Can I belong to both BMABA and a recognised NGB?
Yes — in principle, there’s no rule against dual affiliation. We actively support clubs who wish to remain with a recognised NGB while using BMABA CIC for tools, insurance, safeguarding, software, or other services.
That said, some NGBs don’t ‘play nice’ with dual memberships, and you may be told that you can’t affiliate with anyone else. While we’d question the ethics and competitiveness of that stance, we respect each organisation’s right to set their own policies — and we encourage you to speak with them directly if needed.
Ultimately, the best route forward is the one that makes sense for your club. If your NGB is working for you, that’s great. If not — or if you feel there’s room to improve — BMABA CIC is here as a fully-governed, not-for-profit, professional alternative.
Ministerial Commendation and Parliamentary Recognition

BMABA CIC has been recognised at the highest levels of Government for our commitment to safeguarding in martial arts. During a House of Commons debate on combat sport safety, the Minister for Sport, Stephanie Peacock MP, highlighted the British Martial Arts & Boxing Association by name for our work in supporting independent and unaffiliated clubs to adopt the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts. This direct mention in Parliament demonstrates that our efforts to raise standards and protect participants are shaping the national conversation on safety in combat sports.
Following that debate, the Minister for Sport wrote formally to commend BMABA’s work, praising our role in ensuring safeguarding standards across the independent martial arts sector. She described our contribution as “extremely useful” to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s ongoing policy development and explicitly appreciated our efforts to make martial arts safer for children. This recognition reflects the trust placed in BMABA to help Government address urgent safeguarding challenges highlighted by recent tragedies within combat sports.
For our members and the wider martial arts community, this recognition underlines BMABA’s credibility as a leading voice for independent martial arts in the UK. It demonstrates that our grassroots-driven mission — to promote safe, inclusive, and properly regulated martial arts for all — is influencing national policy and gaining ministerial support. Being referenced in Parliament and commended in writing by the Minister for Sport reinforces that BMABA is not just a governing body, but a sector-shaping organisation working to protect participants and secure the future of martial arts.
BMABA is the only organisation able to issue the Sport England funded Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts Award directly from our member’s area on receipt of our Club Colours Award. Our Colour’s award is free.
