Specialist Cover From A Specialist Association

We understand how important it is for you to be sure your insurance is covering you for the martial arts your teaching.

The insurance provided with BMABA membership is not just a pre-packaged group cover policy from a big provider, nor is it a available anywhere else on them market.

Because of our leading position as a respected and professional martial arts organisation our specialist broker and underwriting provider has permitted us, at our request, the ability to determine our own regulation and requirements for insurances – and for that to be recognised by the policy.

This means the requirements set under the policy are decided in-house by our expert senior management team. We understand the disciplines and styles you teach and the nature of martial arts. We know how different styles will teach students in different ways and we know the innate pressures and responsibilities on instructors.

When you take out BMABA instructor insurance combined with membership you’re not only gaining specialist insurance at some of the market’s best prices, you’re accessing a range of guidance, regulation and support to keep you safe and protected as a club should the worse happen too.

We want you to be absolutely certain what you are and are not covered for. To help you make a properly informed choice, we provide you with the full policy documentation and wording in the FAQs at the bottom of this page. We’ll also provide all members with full guidance on what to expect in the event of a claim before you get there, so you can be fully prepared.

Our association has been improving the standards of instructors and coaches for nearly a decade, and we think it’s critically important you understand exactly what you’re paying for when it comes to anything insurance.

What's Included With BMABA Instructor Insurance?

Our association’s instructor insurance is designed to be as straight forward, flexible and affordable as possible.

Always included in every policy is;

Instructor Public Liability (PL) Cover

Public Liability is considered a core martial arts instructor insurance (see above for more info). Cover is available at £2,000,000, £5,000,000 or £10,000,000.

In a nutshell, it provides cover for your legal liability to pay compensation to third parties for bodily injury and/or damage to property as the result of a negligent act by the Insured arising out of the  instruction of martial arts.

Instructor Professional Indemnity (PI) Cover

Cover for claims against an instructor based upon professional advice given – for example, specific guidance on how to roll etc, rather than an injury arising from their supervision of a class. This could also include unintentional infringement of intellectual property rights, loss of documents or data in your trust, unintentional defamation, libel or slander, unintentional breach of confidence, confidential duty or misuse of information or bad advice on websites & social media.

£500,000 Professional Indemnity (PI) is included free of charge at the association’s cost for all instructors.

BMABA Premium Membership & Licensing

As the instructor insurance is provided via our group cover policy, this means it must be combined with BMABA membership. This entitles you to a whole treasure-trove of resources, tools, features and assistance without any additional charge. This includes a free club website, template grading certificates, health and safety guidance, business support, networking and community, first aid training, free instructor qualifications and so much more – all included with your insurance!

Instead of forcing you to take on optional extras, we provide them as exactly that – optional covers you may wish to include with your cover this year.

Instructor Personal Accident (PA) Insurance

Personal Accident (PA) insurances provides cover as per the schedule for any injury arising from a specific event whilst participating in a BMABA club, or as a BMABA instructor where there is no negligence responsible.

This might include, for example, physiotherapy costs or loss of income, upto the benefit amount, if you as an instructor are injured whilst teaching a class.

Contents & Equipment Cover

This provides cover for contents and equipment. This might be crash mats, focus mitts, specialist self defence equipment or it could cover things like the computers and tables in your gym or reception area.

Abuse Extension

Abuse extension is a very specialist type of cover, and it’s only available from a very few select insurers. Abuse Extension (AE) provides cover for defence of the named instructor if there is an allegation of abuse made against them. This wouldn’t be covered under usual PL or PI, so provided an additional level of support to the instructor.

Need Something More?

If you run a club and are looking for a combined policy to include business extras, such as Public & Products Liability for your limited company, Employer’s Liability or Tenants Liability for leaseholds, you might want to explore our Club Insurance.

“I would like to thank everyone on the BMABA Team that has helped me during my time with what can only be described as the best Martial Arts Association I have ever belonged to and I am proud to be one of its first members. Giovanni, you are an inspiration and entrepreneur for those that embrace a politics-free association, professionally run and a shining example for the rest. Keep up the good work – the recognition is already there and I suspect it will continue. The BMABA is the association that I had hoped and dreamed about to allow me to start teaching self defence with the support and advice I needed, but without the politics and interference I wished to avoid.”

“Someone has answered my gentle prayers and FINALLY designed an organisation that will leave you stress-free in the world of MARTIAL ARTS 🙂

I am so excited to leave my recommendation because words cannot describe how much BMABA means to me and how it has changed everything in my organisation for the better. They are literally representing what we are about here at British MMA in West London, Brentford. We go by ‘Traditional Values with a Modern Approach’. They are so much more and you can take it from me – you’ll never find any other organisation or company doing GREATER things than this team BMABA. For all those who are still traditional and thinking old ways of not changing things around in case there are some concerns. Give me a call from our website or facebook page and I will personally give you a recommendation in why you should change and revamp everything in your club or as an instructor with the BRITISH MARTIAL ARTS & BOXING ASSOCIATION.

Weapons. Styles Without Grades. MMA. Multi-Disciplines Custom Syllabuses. Self Defence.

Our group cover policy is a specialist insurance provision via a specialist broker and is the culmination of more than 2 years work. We are offered the scope and latitude by our insurer to effectively hold the underwriting pen and dictate what is and is not safe, recognised or insurable.

This not only helps us set some of the best standards of safety and professionalism in the UK, but allows us to offer our instructors cover that is specifically tailored around the need of real martial artists with the widest scope of cover available from any UK insurance provider.

It’s our trusted name and robust governance that affords us the confidence of underwriters to insure public liability and professional indemnity in areas like Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Kickboxing and other high risk or specialist disciplines.

What Does It Cost?

We always provide open, clear and ‘fully-inclusive’ pricing so you can make an informed decision about whether or not we’re the right fit for you, and the right value for money too.

Cover is flexible and can be tailored to meet you and your club’s needs.

How to see pricing?

Because we offer a number of different insurance options, as well as a number of different membership levels to match all clubs and budgets, the best way to see the exact cost is to have a play with an application form.

You can toggle insurances up and down, add or remove additional extras and explore membership levels too. If you’re happy with the price, you can apply securely online.

We can offer substantial discounts for clubs with more than one instructor. We also offer Emergency Services and Armed Forces Discounts. Clubs which are registered charities or CICs can also enjoy a discount off the public price.

Please ensure you understand exactly what is and isn’t covered by BMABA group cover insurance policies and memberships. The onus is on you to identify if the cover is correct and accurate for your needs, so please don’t rush this.

Help is on hand if you need it. A friendly chat, an informative e-mail or just a bit more guidance on what’s what. No obligation, no sales pitch. Contact Us If Your Questions Aren’t Answered Below >>

Are there any requirements to the policy?

Like most insurance, there is a few key requirements set by the insurer.

As we vet all applicants to our association, your proof of grade or qualification is verified when you apply. Further to this the insurer will expect you to hold a valid first aid qualification (we can help with this if you don’t have it already) and, if working with adults at risk or children (anyone under the age of 18) you’ll need a safeguarding qualification and an enhanced DBS check.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise – it’s basic stuff. You’ll also need to be following best practice guidance which includes having basic health and safety checks in place like limits on numbers, risk assessments and so on. We can and do provide you with all the guidance you need to ensure you meet the required standard.

There’s also a 28 day grace period on the policy, so you can sign up and get started with us even if you don’t yet have everything in place.

Do you cover contact styles like Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Muay Thai?

Yes, absolutely. The insurer imposes a small surcharge for any instructors teaching what is classified as ‘contact’ sparring (albeit it this will often be semi-contact or tag fighting) in some of the more ‘high risk’ disciplines. This also includes Krav Maga. You can see what this is and how it affects overall costs when signing up on the next page.

I need cover in place immediately, can you help?

Everybody who joins must present proof of grade before we’ll assign any cover or issue any membership. This is a compulsory regulation that every BMABA instructor has already followed.

We can put you ‘on-risk’ immediately, but you’ll need to be able to move fast in terms of providing us with your proof of grade. You can upload this on the back-end of our system as soon as you’ve applied for membership with insurance.

Please give us a call on 01798 306546 after applying if you need cover activating immediately.

I've never heard of the BMABA before, why should I trust you?

We’re a multi-award winning, politics free association that has been in operation since 2012. We’re community run and are known for our incredibly high standards of instructors and coaches. Explore our website to find out more about the association and why 12,500+ members now call us home for their martial arts.

Who underwrites the policy?

Our specialist group cover policy is underwritten by a ‘syndicate’ of different insurers, as the policy provides access to a number of different types of insurance. We (the association) are the policy holder and you are assigned to the policy with membership.

You can read the full policy wording here, as well as the exclusions and limitations here. Personal Accident provisions can be seen here.

If there’s anything else you’d like to see or feel is needed to make an informed decision about the policy’s suitability, please contact us.

I'm not sure if cover is right for me?

We can’t by law offer specific advice on what is required for you and your club. It wouldn’t be safe to, either. We don’t know the specifics of exactly what you’re doing or exactly what your liabilities are.

What we can do, however, is provide you with all the information you need on our policy, the cover, membership and any other conditions or requirements. This should allow you to make an informed decision about whether or not we’re right for you.

Can I see the policy wording and conditions?

Absolutely. We’re very open about the policy you’re assuming cover under, for obvious reasons. You can view the policy wording below. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions.
