Martial Arts Instructor Insurance
Specialist Cover & Membership, Built Around How You Actually Teach.
The Smarter Way To Insure Yourself, And Your Team
At BMABA CIC, we approach martial arts insurance differently. Your instructor cover isn’t just a policy certificate. It’s a flexible protection system designed around how instructors actually teach.
Around three quarters of the instructors we protect teach solo, running their own classes in hired halls and community venues, and our cover is built for exactly that. But it grows with you too. Whether you teach alone, across multiple venues, or lead a full team of instructors and assistants, your cover adapts to the way you operate.
As a UKAS-audited, FCA-registered and award-winning association, we’ve spent more than a decade supporting martial arts instructors across the UK. Your policy includes comprehensive liability protection alongside specialist tools built for martial arts: safeguarding guidance, licensing systems, CPD training and compliance support all come as standard.
This isn’t just insurance paperwork. It’s protection designed to support your teaching, your students and your long-term growth.

Unlimited Event Cover
Sanctioned competitions, seminars and grading events included with no additional event fee.
+ More
200+ styles, training weapons, no venue restrictions, online lessons, holiday camps, plus lots of extras. All included.
Simple, Flexible Cover That Grows With You
Most martial arts insurance is generic cover with no understanding of how you actually teach. No support. Nothing included. Just a certificate and a premium.
BMABA is different. We’re an independent, not-for-profit association that’s been backing UK instructors since 2012. Your policy includes tools, training, compliance, and expert support. All included, no hidden fees.
Solo instructor or multi-venue club, your cover scales with you. Add students, assistants, and event cover whenever you’re ready.
Inclusive of Bronze membership and your instructor insurance. Named or open allocation. Monthly or annual. One instructor or an entire team. You choose exactly what you need, and the more people you cover, the less it costs.
Unlimited sanctioned events included as standard. Club Cover free for qualifying clubs, saving £169.99 per year.
Take It Or Leave It. Honestly.
Plenty of instructors use us purely transactionally, for the insurance and nothing else, and that’s completely fine with us. Membership comes automatically alongside your cover, because our insurance rules require it, but benchmarked against leading alternatives such as MartialGuard, the combined cost of membership and insurance together is typically still lower than insurance alone elsewhere. Use every tool we include, or use none of them. Either way, because we’re a not-for-profit that reinvests in UK martial arts rather than a global insurance group, your premium quietly gives something back to the sport you teach.
See The Numbers For YourselfThe Best Of Both Worlds
Insurers give you a certificate. Associations give you a community. We built both into one membership, so you don’t have to choose.
Most insurers are perfectly legal and properly regulated; that’s not in question. What they don’t provide is everything around the certificate. Based on our experience of the sector; there are other good associations out there.

“Organisations such as the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association support unaffiliated martial arts providers to adopt the safeguarding code… Providers with recognition under the code can display a logo on their promotional materials to show participants that their safety measures have been vetted.”
BMABA CIC has been recognised at the highest levels of Government for our commitment to safeguarding in martial arts. During a House of Commons debate on combat sport safety, the Minister for Sport, Stephanie Peacock MP, highlighted the British Martial Arts & Boxing Association by name for our work in supporting independent and unaffiliated clubs to adopt the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts. This direct mention in Parliament demonstrates that our efforts to raise standards and protect participants are shaping the national conversation on safety in combat sports.
Following that debate, the Minister for Sport wrote formally to commend BMABA’s work, praising our role in raising safeguarding standards across the independent martial arts sector. She described our contribution as “extremely useful” to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s ongoing policy development, and thanked us for our ongoing efforts to make martial arts safer for children. This recognition reflects the trust placed in BMABA to help Government address urgent safeguarding challenges highlighted by recent tragedies within combat sports.
For our members and the wider martial arts community, this recognition underlines BMABA’s credibility as a leading voice for independent martial arts in the UK. It demonstrates that our grassroots-driven mission, to promote safe, inclusive, and properly governed martial arts for all, is influencing national policy and gaining ministerial support. Being referenced in Parliament and commended in writing by the Minister for Sport reinforces that BMABA is not just a governing body, but a sector-shaping organisation working to protect participants and secure the future of martial arts.
“I appreciate your ongoing efforts to make martial arts safer for children.”

Instructors & Coaches
BMABA CIC offers both Named Instructor Insurance and Open Allocation Instructor Insurance to suit clubs of all sizes. Named cover insures a specific individual. Open Allocation provides flexible policies that can be assigned and reassigned between instructors as needed, ideal for clubs with guest instructors or rotating staff. Both formats include as standard: £5M Public Liability, £1M Professional Indemnity, £500K Abuse Cover, and £1M Products Liability, with worldwide cover excluding the USA and Canada. Also standard with every named policy: free cover for sanctioned events, live and pre-recorded online lesson cover, temporary instructor cover for sickness and holidays, maternity and paternity provisions, birthday party cover, and holiday camp and food preparation cover. These are not extras. Optional additions include a £10M Public Liability upgrade at £37.00 per year, Contents Cover up to £5,000 at £75.00 per year, and Personal Accident cover across three tiers. Instructor insurance starts from £67.99 per year for named cover and £77.99 for open allocation at volume, with membership separate; complete cover and membership together starts from £85.98 per year. The more instructors your club registers, the lower the per-instructor cost. Cover is underwritten by AXA XL via Lloyd’s, accessed through our FCA-registered broker.
Explore Pricing »Students
BMABA student insurance provides affordable, scalable public liability cover for every student at your club. Every registration includes £1M Student Public Liability Insurance, BMABA Student Membership, and a formal BMABA licence. Importantly, member-to-member cover has been explicitly confirmed in writing by AXA XL: student-on-student incidents during training are covered, something not guaranteed by all providers. Choose Named student cover, where each student is individually registered with a lifetime licence, or Open Allocation, where you insure a number of active student slots. Both integrate with the Lifetime Student Grade Register, our national safeguarding framework, and the Club Management Platform. Optional Personal Accident cover is available at £4.99 per student per year. Pricing scales significantly with volume: named cover from £3.70 per student per year, reducing to £0.54 at 1,000 students or more; Open Allocation from £2.40, reducing to £0.49 at volume.
Explore Pricing »Clubs & Businesses
Club Cover provides business-level protection for clubs operating as a formal legal entity, whether a limited company, CIC, LLP, charity, or similar. This sits above your instructor and student insurance and protects the organisation itself, with £5M Public Liability, £1M Professional Indemnity, and £500K Abuse Cover for the club as a legal entity. For qualifying clubs, Club Cover is provided completely free: hold a RegulationReady Bronze score or above, insure your instructors through BMABA, and register your students through BMABA, and the full annual cost is gifted to your club. For clubs not yet qualifying, Club Cover is £169.99 per year or £16.99 per month. If your club requires Employer’s Liability or premises cover, we operate a referral process to connect you with appropriate providers.
Explore Pricing »Volunteers & Assistant Instructors
Assistants and volunteers do not require standalone insurance policies. Provided they are fully supervised and not leading classes independently, they fall within the scope of the lead instructor’s cover. For clubs wanting to formally register, licence, and recognise their team, dedicated registrations provide formal BMABA recognition, MyBMABA access, exclusive CPD including the Assistant Training Programme, safeguarding, concussion management, SEND and first aid training, and full integration with your compliance framework. Assistant Instructor registration costs £24.99 per person annually, or five for £100.00. Volunteer registration costs £9.99 per person annually, or five for £39.96. Monthly options are available at £2.49 and £0.99 respectively.
Explore Pricing »Events Cover
Qualifying clubs can run unlimited sanctioned events completely free of charge. Previously priced at £189.99 per event, free event cover is included automatically for clubs with active instructor insurance and student licensing through BMABA. Cover extends to events with up to 500 participants and up to 250 students, with full contact and multi-day events included. All attending competitors must hold a valid BMABA licence, which is nationally transferrable across the UK; non-BMABA competitors can be added to student licences or covered at £2.50 per head. Our dedicated event management platform helps you plan, manage, and document your events from start to finish.
Explore Pricing »Referees & Officials
Specialist cover is available for referees, judges, and ring officials working at competitions, fights, and tournaments. This is standalone cover designed for those officiating rather than instructing or competing, available from approximately £3.33 per month, one of the most affordable specialist covers in UK martial arts.
Explore Pricing »Live Blade Use & Insurance
Live blade cover is available to BMABA members and is fully activatable online through MyBMABA. Cover applies to live blade demonstrations, test-cutting, and martial arts exempt weapon importation in approved instructional contexts, with Border Force letters and certification available on demand through your account. Particularly relevant for Iaido, HEMA, Kenjutsu, and traditional weapons-based practice. Cover requires supervised use, controlled environments, and use justified for traditional, instructional, or technical purposes, with safe storage and transportation as standard.

Real Answers, From The Person Who Built The Cover
Giovanni Soffietto, our CEO, is an expert in policy, governance and insurance, and has spent more than a decade building cover designed around how martial arts is actually taught. These short videos explain exactly how it all works, in plain English.
The Membership That Can Pay For Itself
Here’s the honest version. You might not want to change the providers you already use, and that’s completely okay. Many are excellent, and we’d never ask you to cancel anything. But your club has to have insurance anyway, and ours is priced like an insurer’s while including everything below. Use what you want, when you want. If you don’t, no pressure. If you do, the savings add up fast.
Tick the things your club is already paying for, and watch them become free.
Coaching Levels 1 and 2, SEND Level 1 and concussion (CHIMA) training are included as standard. The wider CPD library needs Silver membership or above.
Tick what you already pay for elsewhere, and watch it become free.
About these estimates*
These prices are estimates based on middle-of-the-road paid providers, and your numbers will vary. We’re not suggesting we’re the best at every one of these. Plenty of specialist tools are excellent, and you’re welcome to keep using them. We just think we’ve built a bloody good system, and everything above is included with membership. Per-person training costs are counted once here, the wider CPD library needs Silver membership or above, and exact membership pricing is always shown in the signup builder.
And the core compliance stack lives here too. One login, one renewal.

Built Differently, And On Purpose
Most cover is sold by generalist brokers who have never set foot on a mat. Ours is designed, governed and administered in-house by martial artists, from a regulated not-for-profit certified to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 27001:2022 under UKAS accreditation.
That means your policy comes wrapped in the things that actually keep instructors safe: vetting, safeguarding oversight, CPD, licensing, and real human help when something goes wrong.
And because we answer to standards rather than shareholders, every pound you spend is reinvested into making martial arts better for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of instructor insurance does BMABA offer?
Two professional-grade models: Named Instructor Insurance, which insures an individual instructor by name, and Open Allocation Instructor Insurance, flexible cover rotated across multiple eligible instructors within a club. Both include full core cover, optional upgrades, and suit solo instructors and larger teams alike.
What is the difference between Named and Open Allocation cover?
Named cover applies to one specific instructor: ideal for solo operators or anyone needing a clear, named certificate for facility hire or contracts. Open Allocation is designed for clubs with multiple instructors, for example three active covers shared across a team of five, provided no more than the covered number are actively instructing at once and all are pre-vetted and registered.
Is instructor insurance mandatory to join BMABA?
No. You can join as a member without holding insurance; we offer standalone membership for those covered elsewhere or teaching under an umbrella organisation. However, to benefit from our insurance, which includes extensive governance and vetting, you must hold an active membership.
Is BMABA instructor insurance available standalone?
No. All policies must be held alongside an active BMABA membership. This is fundamental to our model: only properly vetted, insured, competent instructors access cover, and the accompanying governance oversight makes the cover stronger and more defensible in a claim scenario.
What cover is included by default?
As standard: £5,000,000 Public Liability (upgradeable to £10,000,000), £1,000,000 Professional Indemnity, £1,000,000 Products Liability, and £500,000 Abuse Extension Cover, plus worldwide cover excluding the USA and Canada, full contact training, online lessons, and unlimited sanctioned event cover. Optional protections include Personal Accident, equipment and contents cover, and live blade extensions. All policies are arranged through UK-regulated providers and administered in-house by BMABA CIC.
Do I need a black belt or Dan grade to be insured?
Not necessarily. BMABA allows equivalency recognition: if you can demonstrate credible experience, time served instructing, and peer or club validation, we may accept this as equivalent to a black belt, ensuring instructors from disciplines like MMA or Krav Maga are not excluded unfairly.
Can assistant instructors or volunteers be covered?
Yes. Assistants and volunteers can take Named Insurance or be registered within an Open Allocation model. They must still undergo vetting to meet our minimum standards, including appropriate safeguarding and supervision.
What if I cannot provide formal proof of grade?
Our Black Belt Equivalency Pathway accepts contextual evidence: witness testimonials, teaching history, and training logs. Many instructors operate outside formal grading systems, and we evaluate each application case by case.
Am I covered outdoors or in non-traditional settings?
Yes. Instruction is covered across parks, private homes, community centres, and commercial studios, as long as you follow appropriate risk assessment and safeguarding protocols.
Are one-to-one and private lessons covered?
Yes, whether online or in person, provided instruction follows your declared discipline and safeguarding requirements. This includes personal training, virtual coaching, and small group instruction.
Can I teach overseas or while travelling?
Yes. Provided you meet the policy terms and are a UK resident, you are covered worldwide, excluding the USA and Canada.
Are weapons and contact sparring included?
Yes. Traditional weapon use, such as bo staff, sai, nunchaku and katana, and contact sparring including full-contact formats are included where part of your declared syllabus, unlike many general sports policies that exclude these risks.
What is Abuse Extension Cover and why does it matter?
A rare and critical safeguard covering legal defence costs if an instructor is accused of inappropriate conduct, even where the claim is ultimately unfounded. Many policies exclude this entirely, leaving instructors personally liable. We include £500,000 of cover by default.
Do you offer Live Blade Insurance?
Yes, on a controlled, pre-approved basis. It covers live cutting demonstrations, such as Tameshigiri, Iaido and HEMA, under strict safety supervision. Activities must be declared, risk assessed, and approved before cover is granted. Live Blade cover is added after your membership and core insurance are live, from £60.00 for instructors.
Is BMABA cover suitable for MMA, BJJ or Krav Maga?
Absolutely. We specialise in real-world, high-intensity martial arts, including full-contact formats and competitive sparring, and underwrite for styles many mainstream insurers avoid.
Can I claim if I am injured while teaching?
Personal Accident Cover is available as an optional upgrade, providing predefined payouts for accidental injuries you suffer during teaching or training, regardless of fault, including temporary disability, dental injuries, and physiotherapy.
Can I freeze my insurance if I stop teaching?
Policies are set annually, so no. However, Open Allocation lets clubs manage active instructor numbers flexibly: if you are not teaching for a period, cover can rotate to another eligible instructor in your team, and maternity provisions allow pauses of up to 15 months.
Do I need a coaching qualification to be insured?
It is not required, but strongly encouraged. We include access to BMABA’s own coaching qualifications free with all memberships, helping you meet insurer expectations and modern safeguarding standards.
Can I change instructors mid-policy on Open Allocation?
Yes, that is its purpose. Register as many instructors as you like; just ensure no more than your insured count are instructing simultaneously and all meet vetting requirements. Memberships are not transferable, so adding a new person to cover requires a new membership, available pro-rata.
Am I restricted to a single venue or club?
No. You are covered across all UK venues, clubs, and settings where you instruct within your declared styles, whether you freelance, subcontract, or teach at multiple gyms.
What happens if I let my policy lapse?
You will receive renewal notifications. If cover lapses there is no retroactive protection and you must reapply; any teaching conducted while uninsured would not be covered. We encourage early renewal.
Will BMABA insurance satisfy councils and schools?
Yes. All cover is underwritten by regulated UK insurers with formal certificates of insurance, meeting the documentation needs of local authorities, schools, leisure centres, and commercial landlords.

Matthew Johnson Can't Rate Them Highly EnoughHaving left my previous association in November, and being very daunted by the prospect of being responsible for all my own compliance and everything else I can honestly say BMABA have made the whole thing possible and even pleasant. The training resources are great, it's been fantastic for me to be able to quickly up skill my team, the insurance is really easy to sort out, the team are super friendly and helpful, the perks on Gold membership are also fantastic.

Georgina E Really impressive, 21st century MA organisation. 10/10Found these guys in Martial Arts Illustrated doing a piece on professionalism in martial arts and thought, as an instructor, they might be worth looking at further. Really impressed from the moment I hit their website through to now, 3 months on as a member. Great staff, Giovanni is rediculously knowledgable and our club is now growing under the banner of what has got to be the best martial arts org in the UK.

Michael Willington Definately recommended. Unbelievable Association. The BMABA are unlike any other org I've come across in this industry. Their honest, professional, politics free and most importantly, they know what they're doing. Website is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest, insurance is comprehensive and their overall customer service is just unlike anything else I've had in 25 years of martial arts. Amazing through and through. Would definitely recommend.

Jonathan D BMABA – the Martial Arts Association you NEEDI joined the BMABA right in its infancy (I believe I was their second member!). Giovanni is the most helpful, respectful and genuine person who has turned the possibility of a non-political, highly respected and supportive Martial Arts Association into a reality. I could bang on for hours about the BMABA but don't take my word for it – go and visit the BMABA website and see for yourself.

Fabian Burdett 2020 This team deserves a MedalAs we all know 2020 has been the year from hell for martial arts. One thing that has come out of that is BMABA have done everything in their power to keep clubs like mine up to date with what's happening and tried to push the government to notice us. Couldn't wish for a better association to be a part of. Once again big THANK YOU to you guys for all the help. 💙🐺👊
