Public Liability (PL) Cover

Public Liability is considered a core martial arts insurance and is available at £5,000,000 or £10,000,000 for instructors, £5,000,000 for clubs and £1,000,000, £2,000,000 or £5,000,000 for students. In a nutshell, it provides cover for your legal liability to pay compensation to third parties for bodily injury and/or damage to property as the result of a negligent act by the Insured arising out of the instruction of martial arts. This is the most typical claim we see.

Professional Indemnity Cover

This provides cover for claims against an instructor or the club (business) based upon professional advice given – for example, specific guidance that leads to a financial loss or the failure to fulfil a contract, rather than injury arising from supervision of a class. This could also include unintentional infringement of intellectual property rights, loss of documents or data in your trust, unintentional defamation, libel or slander, unintentional breach of confidence, confidential duty or misuse of information or bad advice on websites & social media, subject to the policy wording. £1,000,000 Professional Indemnity (PI) is included free of charge at the association’s cost for all instructors and clubs.

Abuse Cover

Abuse extension is a very specialist type of cover, and it’s only available from a very few select insurers. Abuse Extension (AE) provides cover for defence of the named instructor if there is an allegation of abuse made against them. This wouldn’t be covered under usual PL or PI, so provided an additional level of support to the instructor. It can also help clubs (businesses) in defending themselves if an instructor is found to be acting inappropriately. We provide £500,000 cover free of charge for all instructors and for clubs.

Personal Accident Cover

Uniquely different to public liability insurance, personal accident cover doesn't require somebody to be proven legally to be at fault in order to claim. This avoids costly and lengthy legal debates and court, thus allowing a student or instructor to claim immediately if they're injured, even if nobody else is involved. This type of cover provides lower levels of indemnity for specific instances - such as £250 of dental or physiotherapy - as opposed to much larger legal liabilities typically under the PL.

Contents Cover

Contents cover can be provided for both individual instructors (for equipment directly in their care) as well as clubs, for up to £5,000 as standard with more available on request. This helps to replace stolen or lost equipment and kit.

Employer's Liability Insurance

This is a legal requirement every business or employer must have. It also applies to clubs with volunteers, work placements or freelance team members too in almost all cases.

Live Blade Cover

As an optional level of additional cover, we have an exclusive Live Blades Insurance policy that can help clubs provision a special type of insurance for live bladed test cutting and demonstrations, as well as for importing or traveling with weapons.

INSTRUCTOR INSURANCE

Instructors insurance (£5,000,000 Public Liability, £1,000,000 Professional Indemnity & £500,000 Abuse Extension) combined with membership and access to all of our membership features is available for as little as £59 per instructor, per year.

STUDENT INSURANCE

Student insurance (£1,000,000 Student Public Liability) combined with student membership and licencing, as well as access to all of our resources and student tools is available for as little as £0.49 per student, per year.

CLUB INSURANCE

Company cover (club cover) inclusive of £5,000,000 Public Liability, £1,000,000 Professional Indemnity, £500,000 Abuse Cover and £10,000,000 Employers Liability is available for £149.99.

Your questions answered

Common questions

How much we charge depends on how big the club is, and how many people (instructors and students) are needed, as well as the specifics of the insurance you may or may not want. All of our pricing is transparent and you can ‘have a play’ with pricing in full from here.

No, it’s not. We cover based on a ‘per instructor’ or ‘per student’ basis – so anyone covered under our group cover policy can teach or train in any location, under any club and in any style provided it’s a BMABA club.

We fortunately (touch wood!) suffer very few claims. This is in part because we’re a professional organisation that only attracts top-quality instructors, but it’s also (we think) due to us being absolutely clear on what insurance will and won’t cover. We don’t leave that sort of thing up to chance.

So far we’ve had an excellent experience with AXA (XL Catlin) our insurer with no claims challenged when presented.

None. Provided you meet the minimum criteria around safeguarding, professional standards and ethics, we’ll happily leave you to manage your club-level affairs with complete sovereignty. 

You don’t involve us in gradings, you don’t pay us anything in fees (except the transparent monthly or annual membership fees), and you can use as much or as little of our guidance, tools and resources as you wish.

There really isn’t one. Our business model is built on scale. We’ve worked hard over since 2012 to build a substantial membership base which means lots and lots of clubs paying very small amounts into ‘one big pot’. This allows us to use scale of economy to invest in technology, resources, insurances and so on – and ultimately, that cost saving is passed back to our members. In turn, we grow. And so on. 

That said, we understand your scepticism and actually welcome it. Exploring our website or contacting our team is the best way to ‘size us up’ but we also offer a year’s free affiliate membership too, should you want to have a look ‘under the hood’ before you jump.
