Start  ·  Grow  ·  Scale

There is a point where a club stops being a hobby that got big and starts being a business.

Two or three venues. A team you are responsible for. Real money moving. Most associations are simply not built for clubs at this stage, and the things that carried you here quietly stop working. We are built for it.

UnlimitedVenues under one membership Per personAssistants and volunteers licensed in their own names One viewCompliance across every site No per-student feesGrowth does not raise your bill
01 /

Everything that worked at one venue breaks somewhere between the second and the fourth.

What used to be fine

You knew every student’s name. You took the register yourself. You knew which of your helpers had a DBS because you organised it. Cash went in a tin and came out again. If something happened on a Tuesday, you were there when it happened.

What happens now

You are not in the room. Someone else is teaching your curriculum to children you have never met, in a hall you have not risk assessed this year, and you are relying on them to tell you if anything goes wrong. That is not a systems problem you can outrun by working harder.

02 / Multi-Site

Every venue, under one membership, with none of them treated as an afterthought.

Add as many locations as you run. Each gets its own page on the national Club Finder with its own timetable, its own enquiry inbox and its own pin on the map, so a parent searching your second town finds that venue rather than your head office.

Behind it, each site carries its own risk assessments, its own registers and its own staff list, while you keep a single view across all of them. No separate accounts, no duplicate memberships, and no charge per location.

03 /

The moment you have a team, you have a governance problem

Not because your people are a risk. Because responsibility now sits with someone who was not in the room, and that has to be evidenced rather than assumed.

i
Everyone holds their own credentials

Assistant instructors and volunteers register in their own names, with their own logins, their own vetting and their own certificated CPD. If someone leaves, their record leaves with them and yours is unaffected. If someone is challenged, the evidence is theirs to produce.

ii
A pathway, not just a checkbox

The Instructor Training Pathway takes a promising student from cadet coaching through Foundation, Qualified and Senior Coach. Growing your own instructors is far more reliable than hiring them, and it is the single biggest constraint on most expanding clubs.

iii
Employed, self-employed or volunteer

Three very different legal positions, with different tax, insurance and liability consequences. We will not do your accounts, but we will tell you plainly which questions you need answered and where a professional adviser is genuinely required.

iv
Delegation with a record behind it

Named roles, including a designated safeguarding lead and deputy, recorded properly rather than understood informally. When an insurer or local authority asks who was responsible, the answer should not require a phone call.

Assistant & Volunteer Licensing
04 /

A head office view of a thing you can no longer see in person

At one venue you know the answer. At five, the honest answer is usually that you hope so. RegulationReady closes that gap by checking every site continuously against your own live data and putting the position on one screen: who is vetted, whose training has lapsed, which venue is missing a current risk assessment, which assistant was never properly registered.

It is the difference between believing your organisation is compliant and being able to demonstrate it, per site, on the day somebody asks.

Per-site complianceEach venue assessed in its own right rather than averaged into a whole.
Expiries before they biteVetting, first aid and safeguarding renewals surfaced across the whole team.
Evidence on demandA compliance position produced for an insurer, landlord or council in seconds.
Nobody unaccounted forEvery person teaching under your name visible in one register.
05 / The Money Side

Billing that behaves like a business rather than a memory

Recurring subscriptions, one-off payments, grading fees, seminar tickets and course sales, running from the same platform as your registers so a lapsed payment appears beside the student it belongs to rather than in a separate app you check monthly.

And critically: no per-student pricing, no per-venue charge and no commission on your income. As a not-for-profit with an asset lock, your growth is not our revenue model, which means the club that doubles in size does not find its association’s bill doubling with it.

  • Subscriptions, invoicing and one-off payments in one place
  • Reporting across every venue you run
  • No seat fees, no per-student charges, no commission
Billing & Payments
06 /

Profit is not a dirty word, and it does not have to mean a for-profit company.

There is nothing immoral about a martial arts club making money. If it pays your wage, it lets you employ other people, it funds a safe place for children to train, and, crucially, it means you are still open in five years when that eleven year old is ready to grade for their black belt, then the money is doing something good.

Clubs do not usually close because the coaching was poor. They close because nobody ever costed the hall hire properly, or because the instructor could not keep subsidising it out of a full-time job. A club that quietly runs at a loss is not more virtuous than one that runs sustainably. It is just closer to disappearing, and it is the students who lose when it does.

The question worth asking is not whether you make money. It is what you do with it, and how you made it. Inflated grading fees, gradings sold on a schedule rather than earned, contracts a parent cannot get out of, belts that mean nothing outside your own four walls. That is the McDojo model, we will not defend it, and it is precisely what our grading integrity work exists to make harder.

Responsible business is the opposite of that, and we champion it openly. A Community Interest Company with an asset lock that legally directs surplus back into its mission. A social enterprise. Or simply a well-run limited company that lets a good instructor leave the nine to five and do the thing they are brilliant at, full time, while inspiring a few hundred other people along the way.

We are a CIC ourselves, so we are not neutral on this.

BMABA reinvests its surplus by law rather than by choice. That is our model, and we think it is the right one for us. It is not the only legitimate one, and we will help you build a profitable club just as willingly as a not-for-profit one, because a club that survives is worth more to its students than a club with a noble structure that folds.

07 / Dedicated DSL Service

Your safeguarding lead should have someone to phone too.

At this size you will have appointed your own designated safeguarding lead, and that person is frequently a senior instructor doing it alongside teaching. When something genuinely difficult lands, a disclosure, a complaint against a coach, a parent threatening to go to the press, they need more than a policy document and a search engine.

Our DSL service connects your team directly to our qualified, full-time safeguarding and compliance staff. Not a ticket queue. A conversation with people who handle these cases as their actual job, who know the thresholds, and who can stay with a case through to resolution rather than answering once and disappearing.

DSL to DSLYour lead speaks to ours as a peer, not as a customer raising a query.
Difficult casesDisclosures, allegations against staff, and anything where the right next step is not obvious.
Complaints and conductHandling a complaint about one of your own instructors without making it worse.
Statutory liaisonWorking alongside the local authority designated officer, children’s social care or the police where a referral is warranted.
The red tapeSuspensions, insurer notification, parent communications and the written record, handled properly rather than improvised.
08 /

However you have chosen to expand

There is no single right structure, and we work with all of them. What matters is that the model you have chosen is reflected properly in your insurance, your licensing and your records.

Model Satellite venues

One club, several halls, your own instructors delivering your curriculum. The simplest structure, and the one most clubs grow into first. Each venue listed and assessed separately under one membership.

Model Academies & full-time sites

A permanent home, daytime provision, employed staff and considerably more premises risk. Different insurance requirements, different risk assessment demands, and a genuine need for named roles and documented process.

Model Franchise & licensed instructors

Independent instructors trading under your name and curriculum. The structure with the most exposure, because their conduct reflects on your brand while sitting outside your direct control. Individual licensing and per-person credentials matter most here.

09 /

At this size, being good is not the same as being able to prove it

A school hiring you for a term of after-school provision, a leisure centre weighing a long hire, a local authority contract, a landlord assessing a full-time lease. All of them are making a judgement about an organisation rather than an instructor, and none of them know martial arts.

Club Colours is our flagship award and the closest thing independent martial arts has to a school of excellence licence. Assessed against safeguarding, governance, professional conduct and student welfare, deliberately harder to earn than membership, and worth considerably more in a tender than a logo you awarded yourself.

Club Management Award

The qualification for running it as a business

Level 2 in particular is written for exactly this stage: financial planning, VAT, employment status, contracts, GDPR in depth and long-term growth strategy. For an established club it also works as a benchmarking exercise, and it usually surfaces things that were never properly assessed on the way up.

Getting the club set up to last

A practical grounding in the mechanics of setting up and running a club, taken from the idea through to a structure and a business plan that actually holds.

  • Financial fundamentals Pricing, tracking income and outgoings, and reading a simple profit and loss statement.
  • Attracting and keeping students Club identity, the marketing that actually works, and turning an enquiry into a member who stays.
  • Day to day operations Scheduling, venue, equipment, administration, data protection basics and professional habits.

Level 2 · Development

Running it with strategic intent

For instructors with the club off the ground who want to plan rather than record, manage people rather than work alongside them, and decide deliberately where it is going.

  • Financial development VAT, PAYE, Making Tax Digital and planning beyond the current term.
  • Legal and governance UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act in depth, contracts, waivers and liability.
  • Employment and people Employment status, statutory rights, automatic enrolment and health and safety duties.
  • Marketing and long-term planning Growth strategy, positioning and where the club should be in five years.

Both are CPD awards, not a substitute for professional advice, and they say so throughout. They draw on HMRC, Companies House, the ICO, ACAS, The Pensions Regulator and other primary sources, note the date any figure applied, and tell you plainly when to take qualified advice instead. A community club running to break even is treated as no less legitimate than a full-time commercial academy.

Three standards, and they build on each other

Most associations offer a logo. These are assessed positions, and the third of them is national recognition we are authorised to issue directly.

Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts

Our frameworks are mapped directly against the Safeguarding Code and formally approved by Sport England, which makes us the only independent martial arts body able to issue recognition under the Code directly. Eligible clubs earn it through MyBMABA automatically, with no third-party submission and at no cost.

How recognition works

Sport England lists the Safeguarding Code on its own safeguarding pages. A club displaying recognition under it is making a claim that somebody else has checked, which is precisely what makes it worth displaying.

A Voice For Independent Martial Arts

Ministerial Commendation And Parliamentary Recognition

“Organisations such as the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association support unaffiliated martial arts providers to adopt the safeguarding code… Providers with recognition under the code can display a logo on their promotional materials to show participants that their safety measures have been vetted.”
Stephanie Peacock MP, House of Commons Debate on Combat Sport Safety

BMABA CIC has been recognised at the highest levels of Government for our commitment to safeguarding in martial arts. During a House of Commons debate on combat sport safety, the Minister for Sport, Stephanie Peacock MP, highlighted the British Martial Arts & Boxing Association by name for our work in supporting independent and unaffiliated clubs to adopt the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts. This direct mention in Parliament demonstrates that our efforts to raise standards and protect participants are shaping the national conversation on safety in combat sports.

Following that debate, the Minister for Sport wrote formally to commend BMABA’s work, praising our role in raising safeguarding standards across the independent martial arts sector. She described our contribution as “extremely useful” to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s ongoing policy development, and thanked us for our ongoing efforts to make martial arts safer for children. This recognition reflects the trust placed in BMABA to help Government address urgent safeguarding challenges highlighted by recent tragedies within combat sports.

For our members and the wider martial arts community, this recognition underlines BMABA’s credibility as a leading voice for independent martial arts in the UK. It demonstrates that our grassroots-driven mission, to promote safe, inclusive, and properly governed martial arts for all, is influencing national policy and gaining ministerial support. Being referenced in Parliament and commended in writing by the Minister for Sport reinforces that BMABA is not just a governing body, but a sector-shaping organisation working to protect participants and secure the future of martial arts.

“I appreciate your ongoing efforts to make martial arts safer for children.”

What Do Our Members Say?

  • Matt J
    Can't Rate Them Highly Enough
Having left my previous association in November, and being very daunted by the prospect of being responsible for all my own compliance and everything else I can honestly say BMABA have made the whole thing possible and even pleasant. The training resources are great, it's been fantastic for me to be able to quickly up skill my team, the insurance is really easy to sort out, the team are super friendly and helpful, the perks on Gold membership are also fantastic.

Really impressive, 21st century MA organisation. 10/10
Found these guys in Martial Arts Illustrated doing a piece on professionalism in martial arts and thought, as an instructor, they might be worth looking at further. Really impressed from the moment I hit their website through to now, 3 months on as a member. Great staff, Giovanni is rediculously knowledgable and our club is now growing under the banner of what has got to be the best martial arts org in the UK.

    Definately recommended. Unbelievable Association.
The BMABA are unlike any other org I've come across in this industry. Their honest, professional, politics free and most importantly, they know what they're doing. Website is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest, insurance is comprehensive and their overall customer service is just unlike anything else I've had in 25 years of martial arts. Amazing through and through. Would definitely recommend.

BMABA – the Martial Arts Association you NEED
I joined the BMABA right in its infancy (I believe I was their second member!). Giovanni is the most helpful, respectful and genuine person who has turned the possibility of a non-political, highly respected and supportive Martial Arts Association into a reality. I could bang on for hours about the BMABA but don't take my word for it – go and visit the BMABA website and see for yourself.

One thing that has come out of that is BMABA have done everything in their power to keep clubs like mine up to date with what's happening and tried to push the government to notice us. Couldn't wish for a better association to be a part of. Once again big THANK YOU to you guys for all the help. 💙🐺👊

As someone with 22 years of experience in martial arts, who saw enough big egos and leaders who only look after their own benefits… I am highly IMPRESSED by the BMABA. I wanted to make sure they don't just promise the world but actually deliver. They support us all the way and constantly look for new ways of making our whole industry better for ALL of us. A National, Regulated, Award-Winning Not-For-Profit - Built From The Ground Up

BMABA CIC is a regulated, independently audited, multi-award-winning social enterprise, and one of the UK’s leading professional homes for independent martial arts.

We hold ISO 9001:2015 and 27001:2022 certification under UKAS accreditation, the same gold standard used to assess hospitals, universities and major corporations. We’re overseen by the Office of the Regulator of Community Interest Companies, with a legal asset lock that means our income is reinvested into grassroots martial arts, never distributed as profit. We’re also a CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) Educational Partner.

We haven’t been propped up by corporate sponsors or legacy funding. We’ve grown organically, one instructor at a time, by doing what we said we’d do. Since 2012 we’ve supported clubs through hardship, driven national reforms, and built a respected, professional home for independent martial arts.

Today we’re trusted by more than 6,500 instructors and clubs, supporting over 100,000 members across 200+ disciplines. Along the way we’ve earned national recognition, from awards in governance and inclusion to features across the BBC, ITV and The Guardian.

We didn’t inherit status. We earned it, by raising the bar and never compromising on our values.

HOW MUCH COULD YOUR CLUB SAVE?

Cut costs. Simplify your club. Invest back into what matters.

Our membership model is simple. By consolidating essential services and tools they already need, many clubs save more than the cost of their membership alone. No hidden upgrades, no shareholder profit, just practical support delivered by a regulated, audited social enterprise.

Empower Your Club With A Platform That Works For You

Run your martial arts club smarter with our full-featured, professionally built Club Management Platform, included free with your membership. Because it’s funded by our not-for-profit mission rather than investors, there are no upsells, no hidden costs, and no per-student fees creeping in later. Just powerful, intuitive tools that stay free.

Built to save you time, money and stress, and trusted by clubs nationwide.

Why Do Thousands Choose BMABA?

What makes us different becomes clear the moment you look closely, from our award-winning governance to the depth of support we offer clubs of every size.

Whether it’s our industry-leading safeguarding standards, our not-for-profit mission, or powerful club technology funded purely by membership, there’s a reason more than 6,500 instructors and thousands of clubs across the UK put their trust in us.

A VOICE FOR INDEPENDENT MARTIAL ARTS

Ministerial Commendation and Parliamentary Recognition

BMABA CIC has been formally recognised in the House of Commons as a leading voice on martial arts safety. During a Parliamentary debate on combat sport safeguarding, the Minister for Sport, Stephanie Peacock MP, highlighted the Association by name for our role in supporting independent and unaffiliated martial arts clubs to adopt the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts, helping to set consistent standards across the sector.

Following that debate, BMABA received a direct letter of commendation from the Minister, acknowledging our efforts to improve safeguarding and recognising the importance of our work in protecting children and young people in martial arts. This recognition at the highest levels of Government demonstrates the influence of our grassroots movement, and underlines the trust placed in BMABA to help shape the future of safe martial arts practice in the UK.

“I appreciate your ongoing efforts to make martial arts safer for children.”

— Stephanie Peacock MP, Minister for Sport, Media, Civil Society and Youth

In her official response to BMABA, the Minister for Sport praised our work in raising safeguarding standards across the independent martial arts sector. She acknowledged our role in supporting unaffiliated clubs, described our input as “extremely useful” for Government policy development, and confirmed that our work will help inform the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s next steps in strengthening child safety in martial arts.

Built For The Sector - Not For Shareholders

BMABA wasn’t inherited or bought. It was built. And in 2025, we made the decision to give it away.

Our founder, who grew up in poverty and built BMABA from scratch with just £20, voluntarily converted the organisation into a regulated not-for-profit Community Interest Company, surrendering nearly £2 million in private value to protect its mission for the long term. That means no shareholders, no dividends and no profiteering, just a legal, permanent commitment to community impact.

We’re a registered social enterprise, governed by the CIC Regulator, certified to ISO 9001:2015 and 27001:2022 under UKAS accreditation, and led by a multi-award winning social entrepreneur who believes martial arts should serve the many, not the few.

This isn’t a badge of convenience or a business dressed up as a cause. It’s a movement, built for clubs, by clubs.

Nationally Recognised Standards

Our Club Colours and RegulationReady awards go far beyond branding or badges. They represent some of the most robust safeguarding and compliance standards available anywhere in UK martial arts.

Mapped directly against the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts (SCiMA) and formally approved by Sport England, our frameworks allow clubs to earn full SCiMA recognition directly through the MyBMABA platform, automatically and at no cost. We are the only independent martial arts body, and one of just two organisations nationwide alongside Sport England’s own NGBs, granted the authority to issue SCiMA certification in this way.

No waiting. No third-party submissions. No extra cost. Every BMABA member has access to this, included as part of our not-for-profit mission to raise standards from the ground up.

Others talk about safeguarding. We built a national infrastructure to deliver it.

Not Entirely Sure?

We offer a genuine 12 months of free membership, with no catches, no obligations and no hidden clauses.

Why? Because we believe you deserve to see first-hand what it feels like to be supported by an organisation that genuinely has your back. We know plenty of clubs have been let down before by associations that overpromised and underdelivered, so we’d rather show you than sell you.

Whether you’re looking for insurance, safeguarding help, student tools, guidance, structure, or simply a community that understands your club’s challenges, free membership gives you access to the same resources, platform and support we provide to thousands of instructors and clubs across the UK.

Take the full year. Explore everything. Then decide for yourself.

Raising Standards, Protecting Clubs

With RegulationReady and Club Colours, every BMABA club gains free access to the most advanced governance framework in martial arts: a gold-standard system built in-house, operated under our ISO 9001:2015 and 27001:2022 certified processes, and recognised nationally through SCiMA.

This isn’t a policy pack gathering dust. Your safeguarding, leadership and compliance are checked dynamically against live data, giving you instant certification, public recognition and complete transparency. No other martial arts body offers anything this comprehensive, and with BMABA CIC it’s included free for every member, because raising standards and protecting grassroots clubs is what we do.
