Cadet Coaching Award . Ages 13 to 17

The Teenager Setting Out The Pads Is The Instructor You Will Have In Ten Years

Every club has one. The junior who stays behind to help, who is trusted with the beginners, who is quietly doing a coach’s job at fifteen with no training and no recognition for it.

The Cadet Coaching Award trains them for it. The Cadet Instructor Training Pathway then gives them Bronze, Silver and Gold to work towards, with the supervision, consent and pacing that working with a child requires.

An example Cadet Coaching Award certificate
Two Things, Not One

The Award Is The Training. The Pathway Is The Recognition.

People conflate these constantly, so it is worth separating them before anything else. A cadet can do either. Most clubs will want both.

The course Cadet Coaching Award Thirteen online lessons written directly for a 13 to 17 year old, ending in an exam and a certificate. Covers the role, duty of care, communicating and demonstrating, helping run a session, safeguarding, and the cadet’s own safety. Done at their own pace, on a phone if that is what they have.
The programme Cadet Instructor Training Pathway Bronze, then Silver, then Gold. Logged hours, observed practice signed off by an instructor, enforced waiting periods between tiers, a private reflective journal, and a BMABA certificate at each stage. Runs in MyBMABA and is tracked as evidence rather than a tick. It is the under-18 half of our wider Instructor Training Pathway, which your club configures to its own standards. The full Instructor Training Pathway

Both are free. Not free as an introductory offer, not free on one tier. The pathway, the platform, the licensing and every provision are covered by BMABA and included in membership.

The Full Running Order

The Cadet Coaching Award, Lesson By Lesson

Thirteen lessons across four modules, finishing on an examination. Written in language a thirteen year old can actually work with, without talking down to them.

Module One

What You Are, And What You Are Not

The first thing a young helper needs is a clear boundary around the role, and a plain explanation of what duty of care actually means when you are the one being looked up to.

  1. Welcome to your Cadet Coaching Award
  2. What your role is, and what it is not
  3. Duty of care, explained
Module Two

Actually Helping On The Mats

Communicating and demonstrating so people can follow you, supporting a session properly, and adapting to students who are not all the same.

  1. Communicating and demonstrating well
  2. Helping to run a session
  3. Working with different students
  4. Being a role model
Module Three

Safety, Safeguarding, And Your Own Protection

Spotting hazards, an age-appropriate introduction to safeguarding, and, just as importantly, the cadet’s own safety and their right to speak up about it.

  1. Safe practice and spotting hazards
  2. An introduction to safeguarding
  3. Your safety and your right to speak up
Module Four

Where This Goes

Reflective practice, and an honest look at the pathway ahead, from Bronze through to the adult route at eighteen.

  1. Reflecting and improving
  2. Where this takes you
  3. Cadet Examination
13 Lessons4 ModulesFully OnlineIntegrated ExamInstant Digital CertificateUnder-18s Only

Note lesson ten. A course that teaches a child to look after other people, and never tells them they are entitled to be looked after themselves, is not a safeguarding-literate course. Their safety and their right to speak up is a lesson in its own right, not a line in someone else’s.

Bronze, Silver, Gold

A Duke Of Edinburgh Style Ladder, Built For A Martial Arts Club

The pathway gives a cadet something to work towards that is visible, sequenced and earned. Each tier is a separate sign-off with its own requirements, and they are awarded strictly in order: Bronze, then Silver, then Gold. It is not possible to enrol a cadet straight into Gold.

Cumulative totals required to reach each tier, not amounts on top of the previous one.
RequirementBronzeSilverGold
Age 13+ 14+ 15+
Grade 6th Kyu 4th Kyu 1st Kyu
Shadowing 5 hours 10 hours 25 hours
Training 15 hours 25 hours 50 hours
Other CPD Not required Not required 5 hours
Mat hours, supervised 20 hours 40 hours 70 hours
Sessions co-taught 5 10 25
Minimum wait 90 days from start 120 days from Bronze 150 days from Silver

Because Silver runs from the Bronze award date and Gold from the Silver award date, a cadet progressing tier by tier waits at least 360 days in total. Just under a year from starting to reaching Gold. That is deliberate: it paces genuine development and makes it impossible to move a cadet through three recognitions in a single term.

Clubs can raise these minimums but cannot reduce them, and can set an opening position for a cadet they have already worked with. The time gate is what keeps that honest, because the clock always runs from the programme start date. No opening balance shortcuts it.

The Part We Will Not Move On

A Cadet Instructor Is A Child. Every Tier Is Supervised, Including Gold.

Gold is the highest recognition available to a 15 to 17 year old, and it still carries no authority to teach unsupervised. The tiers reflect development and responsibility inside supervised teaching, not a gradual loosening of it. That is stated on the certificate itself.

Consent and supervision, enforced by the platform Written parental or guardian consent and a supervision agreement are both required before a cadet programme can be activated at all. Without them, activation is blocked. Not advised against: blocked.
Never alone, not even briefly A qualified instructor, aged 18 or over, 1st Dan minimum, with a valid DBS, must be present and actively supervising. Not in the building. In the room.
The cadet is safeguarded too Age-appropriate workload that does not interfere with their education, never placed alone with children in changing rooms or isolated areas, and a club risk assessment specific to cadet involvement, reviewed at least every six months.
Minor status is verified, not typed in Who is a minor comes from BMABA’s site-wide safeguarding controls rather than anything entered by hand in the programme, so it cannot be got wrong locally.
How It Is Tracked

Evidence, Not A Tick Box

A sign-off at the end of this pathway is backed by a real body of evidence, which is the entire point of running it through the platform rather than on paper.

CPD, logged and approvedThe cadet logs activity across five categories with dates, hours and factual notes. The club verifies and approves or rejects with feedback. Approved hours update the tracker automatically. CPD counts from the start date forward and is never backdated.
Observed practice, stampedWarm Up at Bronze, Cool Down at Silver, Technical Skills at Gold by default, plus anything else the club switches on. An instructor records what they observed with a note; the stamp captures who and when, then locks. Cadets cannot tick their own.
Re-demonstrated each tierWhere an observation is assigned to more than one tier, the cadet has to show it again and it is stamped again. A skill demonstrated at thirteen is not assumed to still be there at fifteen.
A private learning journalTheir own reflective space, which never counts towards hours or the award. Private by default. If they choose to share it, the club must accept a safeguarding notice first, which is explicit that this matters especially where the assistant is a child.
And Then What

Gold At Seventeen Is Not The End Of It

On turning 18 and reaching 1st Dan or equivalent, a Gold cadet becomes eligible to move onto the Adult Instructor pathway, and their cadet CPD and mat hours may carry over at the club’s discretion. They then meet the adult requirements in full.

If someone is close to eighteen when they start, decide together, with parents involved, whether to begin on the cadet pathway and move across mid-term or simply wait. A cadet who turns eighteen part way through can no longer receive the cadet tier awards, but their CPD carries over.

Typical timescales: Bronze in three to six months, Silver a further six to nine, Gold a further six to twelve. A cadet who starts at thirteen and goes the distance arrives at eighteen with several years of logged, observed, verified practice behind them. Very few people entering coaching anywhere in this sector can say that.

How Our Standards Evolve

Qualifications That Move When The Sector Moves

A governing body that never changes its own qualifications is not being consistent, it is being inattentive. Our CPD catalogue is reviewed on a rolling cadence rather than left to age, and reviewed again out of cycle whenever something material shifts: new legislation, updated statutory guidance, a sector-wide review, or clubs telling us that what we teach no longer matches what they are dealing with.

The cadet tiers used to be awardable out of sequence, and a cadet could be enrolled straight into Gold. Reviewing how clubs were actually using the pathway made the problem obvious: without enforced sequencing and time gates, three recognitions could be issued inside a term, which devalued all three. Bronze, Silver and Gold are now strictly sequential with minimum waiting periods enforced by the platform.

Rolling review, not a rewrite when it is embarrassing Courses carry a review cycle and are revisited on it. Most CPD refreshes on a two-year validity, at which point you simply re-enrol and work through the current version. Coaching qualifications do not expire.
Out-of-cycle when the ground moves Significant legislative change, new statutory guidance or a major sector review triggers a review immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled one.
Told in advance, through the Governance Group Changes reach members before they land, not afterwards. Where a course splits into levels, the convention is Level 1 at practitioner level and Level 2 at coordinator or lead level.
Nothing you have earned is taken away We will never release updated CPD in a way that wipes a prior verification, knocks out a linked standard such as Club Colours, or forces you to restart an award because the schedule changed.

Our workforce of instructors, assistant instructors and volunteers is who this is for. When their job changes, the training that supports it should already have changed, rather than catching up afterwards.

Why This Certificate Carries Weight

Anybody Can Publish A Course. Rather Fewer Can Stand Behind One.

This one puts children into positions of responsibility over other children. It is not a subject to take from an unaccountable source.

CIMSPA

Endorsed Training Provider

BMABA is a CIMSPA Endorsed Training Provider, and we map our qualifications to a recognised professional standard wherever one exists. Mapped is not the same as endorsed: a course is only formally CIMSPA Endorsed CPD once it has been submitted, reviewed and certified, and we say so on the course itself when it has.

UKRLP

UK Register Of Learning Providers

We are listed on the UK Register of Learning Providers, the government-maintained record of organisations delivering learning in the United Kingdom.

Safeguarding Code

Named By Sport England

Sport England’s own safeguarding guidance for martial arts names four organisations, and we are the only independent, multi-style association among them. A BMABA club holding Club Colours has the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts issued automatically rather than applying for it.

ISO 9001:2015

Certified Quality Management

Certified under UKAS accreditation via the British Assessment Bureau. The award is operated under that management system, which is what makes the time gates, the audit trail and the locked stamps meaningful rather than decorative.

ISO 27001:2022

Certified Information Security

Also UKAS accredited, with zero non-conformities at our most recent audit. This pathway holds consent records, observation notes and a child’s reflective journal, which is about as sensitive as club data gets.

Honest scope

What The Certificate Is Not

It records instructorship status only. It is not a licence, not a coaching qualification, and not proof of grade or of any entitlement to teach without supervision. The ISO certifications shown on it relate solely to BMABA CIC’s management system and are not conveyed to the club or the holder.

Who Gets What

Free, And Optional

Two things worth being clear about before a club commits to anything.

CostEntirely freeThe pathway, the platform and the licensing are covered by BMABA and included in membership
ObligationNoneNo club has to use it, and an assistant can stay an assistant indefinitely
What only the pathway givesCertificate and evidenceOnly cadets who complete it receive a BMABA-issued certificate and the standardised evidence trail

A club may separately charge trainees for its own wider training programme if it chooses. That is a club matter and nothing in the BMABA pathway carries a fee.

Study It In The Car Park Between Classes If That Is What Works

Our qualifications and awards are delivered entirely online through our own learning platform, on the website or in the BMABA app. Phone, tablet, laptop, whatever you have in your hand.

Your place is saved as you go, so you can do a lesson on your lunch break, another while the kids are at training, and finish the exam on a Sunday evening. Nothing expires part way through and nothing has to be done in one sitting.

This matters more for cadets than for anyone else. A fifteen year old fits training around school, homework and a Saturday job, usually on a phone. The course saves their place and has no deadline to work against.

Far More Helpful Than Any Other Association
Having been a part of BMABA for a short while, I can say that already they have been far more helpful than any other association I have been involved in. After 10 years of martial arts, I hope to continue instructing under BMABA for many years.

    Can't Rate Them Highly Enough
Having left my previous association in November, and being very daunted by the prospect of being responsible for all my own compliance and everything else I can honestly say BMABA have made the whole thing possible and even pleasant. The training resources are great, it's been fantastic for me to be able to quickly up skill my team, the insurance is really easy to sort out, the team are super friendly and helpful, the perks on Gold membership are also fantastic.

Really impressive, 21st century MA organisation. 10/10
Found these guys in Martial Arts Illustrated doing a piece on professionalism in martial arts and thought, as an instructor, they might be worth looking at further. Really impressed from the moment I hit their website through to now, 3 months on as a member. Great staff, Giovanni is rediculously knowledgable and our club is now growing under the banner of what has got to be the best martial arts org in the UK.

    Definately recommended. Unbelievable Association.
The BMABA are unlike any other org I've come across in this industry. Their honest, professional, politics free and most importantly, they know what they're doing. Website is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest, insurance is comprehensive and their overall customer service is just unlike anything else I've had in 25 years of martial arts. Amazing through and through. Would definitely recommend.

BMABA – the Martial Arts Association you NEED
I joined the BMABA right in its infancy (I believe I was their second member!). Giovanni is the most helpful, respectful and genuine person who has turned the possibility of a non-political, highly respected and supportive Martial Arts Association into a reality. I could bang on for hours about the BMABA but don't take my word for it – go and visit the BMABA website and see for yourself.

One thing that has come out of that is BMABA have done everything in their power to keep clubs like mine up to date with what's happening and tried to push the government to notice us. Couldn't wish for a better association to be a part of. Once again big THANK YOU to you guys for all the help. 💙🐺👊

THINKING OF JOINING?

Still Thinking It Over?

Choosing an association isn’t a decision to rush, and we’d never ask you to. Our team is here to offer honest, straightforward advice with no pressure and no sales scripts.

Whether you’re comparing support, questioning the value of your current membership, or just want to talk things through, we’re happy to help, even if the answer is that we’re not the right fit for you.

We’re a full-time, professional team with nationally certified standards behind everything we do. You’ll feel the difference the moment you get in touch.

Trusted by more than 6,500 instructors and clubs.

A National, Regulated, Award-Winning Not-For-Profit - Built From The Ground Up

BMABA CIC is a regulated, independently audited, multi-award-winning social enterprise, and one of the UK’s leading professional homes for independent martial arts.

We hold ISO 9001:2015 and 27001:2022 certification under UKAS accreditation, the same gold standard used to assess hospitals, universities and major corporations. We’re overseen by the Office of the Regulator of Community Interest Companies, with a legal asset lock that means our income is reinvested into grassroots martial arts, never distributed as profit. We’re also a CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) Educational Partner.

We haven’t been propped up by corporate sponsors or legacy funding. We’ve grown organically, one instructor at a time, by doing what we said we’d do. Since 2012 we’ve supported clubs through hardship, driven national reforms, and built a respected, professional home for independent martial arts.

Today we’re trusted by more than 6,500 instructors and clubs, supporting over 100,000 members across 200+ disciplines. Along the way we’ve earned national recognition, from awards in governance and inclusion to features across the BBC, ITV and The Guardian.

We didn’t inherit status. We earned it, by raising the bar and never compromising on our values.

HOW MUCH COULD YOUR CLUB SAVE?

Cut costs. Simplify your club. Invest back into what matters.

Our membership model is simple. By consolidating essential services and tools they already need, many clubs save more than the cost of their membership alone. No hidden upgrades, no shareholder profit, just practical support delivered by a regulated, audited social enterprise.

Empower Your Club With A Platform That Works For You

Run your martial arts club smarter with our full-featured, professionally built Club Management Platform, included free with your membership. Because it’s funded by our not-for-profit mission rather than investors, there are no upsells, no hidden costs, and no per-student fees creeping in later. Just powerful, intuitive tools that stay free.

Built to save you time, money and stress, and trusted by clubs nationwide.

Why Do Thousands Choose BMABA?

What makes us different becomes clear the moment you look closely, from our award-winning governance to the depth of support we offer clubs of every size.

Whether it’s our industry-leading safeguarding standards, our not-for-profit mission, or powerful club technology funded purely by membership, there’s a reason more than 6,500 instructors and thousands of clubs across the UK put their trust in us.

— Stephanie Peacock MP, House of Commons Debate on Combat Sport Safety

"Organisations such as the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association support unaffiliated martial arts providers to adopt the safeguarding code… Providers with recognition under the code can display a logo on their promotional materials to show participants that their safety measures have been vetted.”

A VOICE FOR INDEPENDENT MARTIAL ARTS

Ministerial Commendation and Parliamentary Recognition

BMABA CIC has been formally recognised in the House of Commons as a leading voice on martial arts safety. During a Parliamentary debate on combat sport safeguarding, the Minister for Sport, Stephanie Peacock MP, highlighted the Association by name for our role in supporting independent and unaffiliated martial arts clubs to adopt the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts, helping to set consistent standards across the sector.

Following that debate, BMABA received a direct letter of commendation from the Minister, acknowledging our efforts to improve safeguarding and recognising the importance of our work in protecting children and young people in martial arts. This recognition at the highest levels of Government demonstrates the influence of our grassroots movement, and underlines the trust placed in BMABA to help shape the future of safe martial arts practice in the UK.

Stephanie Peacock MP © UK Parliament (Open Parliament Licence v3.0)

“I appreciate your ongoing efforts to make martial arts safer for children.”

— Stephanie Peacock MP, Minister for Sport, Media, Civil Society and Youth

In her official response to BMABA, the Minister for Sport praised our work in raising safeguarding standards across the independent martial arts sector. She acknowledged our role in supporting unaffiliated clubs, described our input as “extremely useful” for Government policy development, and confirmed that our work will help inform the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s next steps in strengthening child safety in martial arts.

Built For The Sector - Not For Shareholders

BMABA wasn’t inherited or bought. It was built. And in 2025, we made the decision to give it away.

Our founder, who grew up in poverty and built BMABA from scratch with just £20, voluntarily converted the organisation into a regulated not-for-profit Community Interest Company, surrendering nearly £2 million in private value to protect its mission for the long term. That means no shareholders, no dividends and no profiteering, just a legal, permanent commitment to community impact.

We’re a registered social enterprise, governed by the CIC Regulator, certified to ISO 9001:2015 and 27001:2022 under UKAS accreditation, and led by a multi-award winning social entrepreneur who believes martial arts should serve the many, not the few.

This isn’t a badge of convenience or a business dressed up as a cause. It’s a movement, built for clubs, by clubs.

All of this is included as part of your membership, with no extra charges.

Nationally Recognised Standards

Our Club Colours and RegulationReady awards go far beyond branding or badges. They represent some of the most robust safeguarding and compliance standards available anywhere in UK martial arts.

Mapped directly against the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts (SCiMA) and formally approved by Sport England, our frameworks allow clubs to earn full SCiMA recognition directly through the MyBMABA platform, automatically and at no cost. We are the only independent martial arts body, and one of just two organisations nationwide alongside Sport England’s own NGBs, granted the authority to issue SCiMA certification in this way.

No waiting. No third-party submissions. No extra cost. Every BMABA member has access to this, included as part of our not-for-profit mission to raise standards from the ground up.

Others talk about safeguarding. We built a national infrastructure to deliver it.

Not Entirely Sure?

We offer a genuine 12 months of free membership, with no catches, no obligations and no hidden clauses.

Why? Because we believe you deserve to see first-hand what it feels like to be supported by an organisation that genuinely has your back. We know plenty of clubs have been let down before by associations that overpromised and underdelivered, so we’d rather show you than sell you.

Whether you’re looking for insurance, safeguarding help, student tools, guidance, structure, or simply a community that understands your club’s challenges, free membership gives you access to the same resources, platform and support we provide to thousands of instructors and clubs across the UK.

Take the full year. Explore everything. Then decide for yourself.

Raising Standards, Protecting Clubs

With RegulationReady and Club Colours, every BMABA club gains free access to the most advanced governance framework in martial arts: a gold-standard system built in-house, operated under our ISO 9001:2015 and 27001:2022 certified processes, and recognised nationally through SCiMA.

This isn’t a policy pack gathering dust. Your safeguarding, leadership and compliance are checked dynamically against live data, giving you instant certification, public recognition and complete transparency. No other martial arts body offers anything this comprehensive, and with BMABA CIC it’s included free for every member, because raising standards and protecting grassroots clubs is what we do.
