Instructor Training Pathway . Included Free

Your Club Already Trains Its Instructors. This Is The Framework That Proves It.

Every serious club develops its own people. Years of shadowing, correcting, trusting someone with a warm-up and then a class. The problem has never been the training. It has been that none of it is written down anywhere that counts, so the person doing it has nothing to show for it and you have nothing to point at.

The Instructor Training Pathway gives that work an external, accredited structure without taking a single decision away from you.

The Point Of All This

The Club Holds The Keys. We Hold The Framework.

The fear with any external pathway is that it arrives with opinions about how you should run your club. This one does not, and the design makes that structural rather than a promise.

BMABA sets a floor: minimum hours, minimum observations, minimum waiting periods, and safeguarding requirements that cannot be reduced. Above that floor, everything is yours. Which courses count. Which competencies matter. How many hours you want on the mat. Whether a grading, a competition or your own in-house seminar has to be completed before anyone gets signed off. Whether that applies to everybody by default or is built individually, person by person.

Your in-house programme does not become redundant. It becomes the thing the certificate is actually evidencing. The pathway records what happens in your club, under your standards, and then puts a national framework around it.

What You Configure

Four Things You Decide, Once Or Per Person

Set your club standards once in Club Settings and they apply to everyone you enrol afterwards, or build a bespoke programme for an individual where that makes more sense.

01

Your own competencies and sign-offs

Every club starts with three compulsory observations: Warm Up, Cool Down and Technical Skills. Beyond those, switch on anything from the shipped library, sparring or randori, kata, forms and patterns, weapons handling, pad and focus work, leading a grading, conditioning, behaviour management, injury response, class set-up and close-down, or write your own from scratch.

Anything you mark compulsory has to be signed off before the award. Your syllabus, your standards, your judgement.

A club building its own competencies and sign-off items
02

Your own thresholds

The BMABA minimums are a floor and you can raise any of them. Shadowing hours, training hours, other CPD, mat hours and sessions taught are all yours to set higher if your club expects more before it will put its name to somebody.

You cannot go below the floor, and if requirements become excessive we may ask you to bring them back to something achievable. Between those two points it is entirely your call.

A club setting minimum hours and sessions for each threshold
03

Your own required CPD, including in-house

Require any BMABA course you want as part of the pathway. More usefully, add your own: your club’s internal instructor seminar, your style’s technical grading course, a session you run yourself twice a year. It becomes a required component in exactly the same way, tracked and evidenced alongside everything else.

This is the part clubs are most surprised by. Your in-house training is not something the pathway works around. It is something the pathway can enforce.

A club adding its own in-house CPD as a required part of the pathway
04

Your own progress markers

Gradings, competitions, events, courses run by your association, anything you consider a milestone can sit in the programme as a required marker. If your club has always said nobody teaches until they have graded twice and worked an event, the pathway can hold that as a rule rather than as something everyone half-remembers.

Apply your standards by default to everyone you enrol, or build something individual where a particular person needs a different route.

Two Routes

One For Adults, One For Under-18s

The two run on the same engine and are configured the same way. What differs is the outcome, the pacing and the safeguarding around it.

18 and over Adult Instructor Pathway

Outcome is BMABA Instructorship Status: formal recognition that the person has completed the programme and is held by their club to be an instructor in standing. Minimum 90 days from the programme start date, typically twelve to thirty-six months in practice.

  • 35 hours shadowing, 135 training, 10 other CPD
  • 90 mat hours and 20 sessions taught
  • All three core observations signed off
  • Safeguarding, first aid, Enhanced DBS within three years
13 to 17 Cadet Instructor Pathway

Bronze, then Silver, then Gold, strictly in sequence, each a separate sign-off. Every tier is a supervised status and remains so at Gold. A cadet progressing tier by tier waits at least 360 days from starting to reaching Gold.

  • Cumulative minimums rising across the three tiers
  • Parental consent and a supervision agreement enforced before activation
  • Core observations re-demonstrated at each tier
  • Supervised, under-18 status printed on the certificate
The cadet pathway in full
Day To Day

They Log It. You Verify It. Nobody Ticks Their Own Box.

The whole thing rests on a separation of duties. The assistant records what they did; the club confirms it actually happened. Neither side can do the other’s job, which is what makes the finished record worth something.

The assistant’s side The assistant instructor logging CPD and training hours

Logs activity across five categories with a date, hours and factual notes: shadowing, training, at events, personal development, and other CPD. Sees their totals, what is still outstanding, and the earliest date they could be considered. That date is shown as a minimum rather than a promise, because the award still depends on the club’s assessment.

Your side The instructor signing off logged hours and observed practice

Reviews each submission, checks it took place and the hours are right, then approves or rejects with feedback. Approved hours update the tracker automatically. Observations are stamped with your name, the date and a short note on what you actually saw, and then lock.

Assistants cannot tick their own observations and cannot see your private summary notes. Rejected CPD does not count. A mistaken stamp can be removed by an oversight account, and the removal is written to the audit trail rather than disappearing.

Why It Cannot Be Gamed

The Time Gates Are The Reason This Is Worth Anything

A framework that can be completed in a fortnight is a certificate mill. Ours cannot be, and it is worth understanding exactly why.

90 daysAdult Instructorship, from the programme start date
90 daysCadet Bronze, from the programme start date
120 daysCadet Silver, from the date Bronze was awarded
150 daysCadet Gold, from the date Silver was awarded

These are hard gates enforced by the platform. Until the date is reached the sign-off is blocked and the reason is shown, however quickly the hours and observations are completed. Both sides can see the earliest eligible date.

Clubs can set an opening position at enrolment for an assistant they have already worked with for months, which is legitimate and deliberately retained. The gate is what keeps it honest: the clock runs from the start date, so no opening balance shortcuts it. The start date itself defaults to today, can be backdated by no more than seven days, cannot be set in the future, and locks the moment the programme is activated. Seven days is far too small to affect a 90-day gate, which is exactly the point.

This is also why the certificate means something to a venue, a local authority or a parent. Not because we say it does, but because the process behind it cannot be rushed and the evidence behind it cannot be self-declared.

What Both Sides See

Progress Nobody Has To Chase

The most common failure of an in-house development programme is not that the training is poor. It is that nobody knows where anyone is up to, so it quietly stops. This is the fix.

A cadet programme in progress, working towards Bronze
A cadet programme in progress, with everything still outstanding before Bronze listed explicitly.
The pathway dashboard as a cadet instructor sees it
The same programme from the cadet’s side: their hours, their sessions, what their club still needs to sign off.

When an eligibility panel says exactly what is missing, a development programme stops depending on somebody remembering to have a conversation about it.

The Business Case

People Stay Where They Can See Themselves Progressing

Clubs lose good assistants for a reason that has very little to do with martial arts. They give years of unpaid help, get better, get trusted with more, and at no point does anything change that they can point to. Eventually somebody offers them something that does.

Something to work towardsA visible next milestone with the requirements written down, rather than waiting to be told they are ready one day.
Recognition that travelsA BMABA-issued certificate with a national framework behind it, which belongs to them and is worth something outside your club as well as inside it.
A record of their own developmentHours, observed practice and a private reflective journal that follows them into instructorship and on into BMABA Workspace.
Proof for everyone elseWhen a venue, an insurer or a parent asks how your instructors are trained, the answer is a documented pathway rather than an assurance.
Cost

All Of It Is Free. Not A Tier, Not A Trial, Not A Module Of It.

The Instructor Training Pathway, the Cadet pathway, the Cadet Coaching Award, the platform that runs them and every certificate issued at the end are provided by BMABA CIC at no charge. There is no add-on, no upgrade and no per-assistant fee.

A club may separately charge its trainees for its own wider training programme if it chooses. That is a club matter. Nothing in the BMABA pathway itself carries a fee, and it never has.

And Your Assistants Get Considerably More Than The Pathway

An assistant instructor registered with BMABA is not a name on a list. Registration carries its own account, its own CPD entitlement and its own recognition, and it costs the club nothing beyond registering them.

BMABA Induction TrainingWhere every member starts, whatever their role

The only requirement is that they are a registered assistant instructor with your club. Register them, and the whole entitlement opens up. It is worth doing even if you never enrol anyone on the pathway itself.

At The End Of It

A Certificate That Says What It Means, And Only What It Means

BMABA generates the certificate when an award is signed off, and the club controls when it becomes available to download.

A Cadet Bronze instructorship certificate
Cadet Bronze
A Cadet Silver instructorship certificate
Cadet Silver
An Adult Certificate of Instructorship
Adult Certificate of Instructorship

It records instructorship status only. It is issued by BMABA CIC in good faith on the club’s formal attestation, for which the club is responsible. It is not a licence, not a coaching qualification, and not proof of grade, black belt or any entitlement to teach without supervision. For cadets it states the supervised, under-18 status explicitly. The ISO 9001:2015 and UKAS-accredited certification shown on it relate solely to the Quality Management System of BMABA CIC, under which the award is operated, and are not conveyed to the club or the holder.

How Our Standards Evolve

Qualifications That Move When The Sector Moves

A governing body that never changes its own qualifications is not being consistent, it is being inattentive. Our CPD catalogue is reviewed on a rolling cadence rather than left to age, and reviewed again out of cycle whenever something material shifts: new legislation, updated statutory guidance, a sector-wide review, or clubs telling us that what we teach no longer matches what they are dealing with.

The cadet tiers used to be awardable out of sequence, and a cadet could be enrolled straight into Gold. Reviewing how clubs were actually using the pathway made the problem obvious: without enforced sequencing and time gates, three recognitions could be issued inside a single term, which devalued all three. Bronze, Silver and Gold are now strictly sequential with minimum waiting periods enforced by the platform.

Rolling review, not a rewrite when it is embarrassing Courses carry a review cycle and are revisited on it. Most CPD refreshes on a two-year validity, at which point you simply re-enrol and work through the current version. Coaching qualifications do not expire.
Out-of-cycle when the ground moves Significant legislative change, new statutory guidance or a major sector review triggers a review immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled one.
Told in advance, through the Governance Group Changes reach members before they land, not afterwards. Where a course splits into levels, the convention is Level 1 at practitioner level and Level 2 at coordinator or lead level.
Nothing you have earned is taken away We will never release updated CPD in a way that wipes a prior verification, knocks out a linked standard such as Club Colours, or forces you to restart an award because the schedule changed.

Our workforce of instructors, assistant instructors and volunteers is who this is for. When their job changes, the training that supports it should already have changed, rather than catching up afterwards.

Why The Framework Carries Weight

An External Structure Is Only Worth The Body Behind It

Anyone can print a certificate. The question is what stands behind the process that produced it.

ISO 9001:2015

Certified Quality Management

Certified under UKAS accreditation via the British Assessment Bureau. The award is operated under that management system, which is what makes the time gates, the audit trail and the locked stamps meaningful rather than decorative.

ISO 27001:2022

Certified Information Security

Also UKAS accredited, with zero non-conformities at our most recent audit. The pathway holds consent records, observation notes and, where a cadet is involved, a child’s reflective journal.

CIMSPA

Endorsed Training Provider

BMABA is a CIMSPA Endorsed Training Provider, and we map our qualifications to a recognised professional standard wherever one exists. Mapped is not the same as endorsed: a course is only formally CIMSPA Endorsed CPD once it has been submitted, reviewed and certified.

UKRLP

UK Register Of Learning Providers

We are listed on the UK Register of Learning Providers, the government-maintained record of organisations delivering learning in the United Kingdom.

Safeguarding Code

Named By Sport England

Sport England’s safeguarding guidance for martial arts names four organisations, and we are the only independent, multi-style association among them. A BMABA club holding Club Colours has the Safeguarding Code issued automatically rather than applying for it.

Cyber Essentials

Government-Backed Baseline

We hold Cyber Essentials certification, the UK government-backed scheme covering the technical controls that stop the overwhelming majority of common attacks.

Cost And Obligation

Free, And Optional

Two things worth stating plainly before a club commits to anything.

CostEntirely freeThe pathway, the platform, the licensing and every provision are covered by BMABA and included in membership
ObligationNoneNo club has to use it, and an assistant can remain an assistant indefinitely
What only the pathway givesCertificate and evidenceOnly assistants who complete it receive a BMABA-issued instructorship certificate and the standardised evidence trail

A club may separately charge trainees for its own wider training programme if it chooses. That is a club matter, and nothing in the BMABA pathway itself carries a fee.

    Can't Rate Them Highly Enough
Having left my previous association in November, and being very daunted by the prospect of being responsible for all my own compliance and everything else I can honestly say BMABA have made the whole thing possible and even pleasant. The training resources are great, it's been fantastic for me to be able to quickly up skill my team, the insurance is really easy to sort out, the team are super friendly and helpful, the perks on Gold membership are also fantastic.

Really impressive, 21st century MA organisation. 10/10
Found these guys in Martial Arts Illustrated doing a piece on professionalism in martial arts and thought, as an instructor, they might be worth looking at further. Really impressed from the moment I hit their website through to now, 3 months on as a member. Great staff, Giovanni is rediculously knowledgable and our club is now growing under the banner of what has got to be the best martial arts org in the UK.

The BMABA are unlike any other org I've come across in this industry. Their honest, professional, politics free and most importantly, they know what they're doing. Website is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest, insurance is comprehensive and their overall customer service is just unlike anything else I've had in 25 years of martial arts. Amazing through and through. Would definitely recommend.

BMABA – the Martial Arts Association you NEED
I joined the BMABA right in its infancy (I believe I was their second member!). Giovanni is the most helpful, respectful and genuine person who has turned the possibility of a non-political, highly respected and supportive Martial Arts Association into a reality. I could bang on for hours about the BMABA but don't take my word for it – go and visit the BMABA website and see for yourself.

Whether you’re comparing support, questioning the value of your current membership, or just want to talk things through, we’re happy to help, even if the answer is that we’re not the right fit for you.

A National, Regulated, Award-Winning Not-For-Profit - Built From The Ground Up

BMABA CIC is a regulated, independently audited, multi-award-winning social enterprise, and one of the UK’s leading professional homes for independent martial arts.

We hold ISO 9001:2015 and 27001:2022 certification under UKAS accreditation, the same gold standard used to assess hospitals, universities and major corporations. We’re overseen by the Office of the Regulator of Community Interest Companies, with a legal asset lock that means our income is reinvested into grassroots martial arts, never distributed as profit. We’re also a CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) Educational Partner.

We haven’t been propped up by corporate sponsors or legacy funding. We’ve grown organically, one instructor at a time, by doing what we said we’d do. Since 2012 we’ve supported clubs through hardship, driven national reforms, and built a respected, professional home for independent martial arts.

Today we’re trusted by more than 6,500 instructors and clubs, supporting over 100,000 members across 200+ disciplines. Along the way we’ve earned national recognition, from awards in governance and inclusion to features across the BBC, ITV and The Guardian.

We didn’t inherit status. We earned it, by raising the bar and never compromising on our values.

HOW MUCH COULD YOUR CLUB SAVE?

Cut costs. Simplify your club. Invest back into what matters.

Our membership model is simple. By consolidating essential services and tools they already need, many clubs save more than the cost of their membership alone. No hidden upgrades, no shareholder profit, just practical support delivered by a regulated, audited social enterprise.

Empower Your Club With A Platform That Works For You

Run your martial arts club smarter with our full-featured, professionally built Club Management Platform, included free with your membership. Because it’s funded by our not-for-profit mission rather than investors, there are no upsells, no hidden costs, and no per-student fees creeping in later. Just powerful, intuitive tools that stay free.

Built to save you time, money and stress, and trusted by clubs nationwide.

Why Do Thousands Choose BMABA?

What makes us different becomes clear the moment you look closely, from our award-winning governance to the depth of support we offer clubs of every size.

Whether it’s our industry-leading safeguarding standards, our not-for-profit mission, or powerful club technology funded purely by membership, there’s a reason more than 6,500 instructors and thousands of clubs across the UK put their trust in us.

— Stephanie Peacock MP, House of Commons Debate on Combat Sport Safety

"Organisations such as the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association support unaffiliated martial arts providers to adopt the safeguarding code… Providers with recognition under the code can display a logo on their promotional materials to show participants that their safety measures have been vetted.”

A VOICE FOR INDEPENDENT MARTIAL ARTS

Ministerial Commendation and Parliamentary Recognition

BMABA CIC has been formally recognised in the House of Commons as a leading voice on martial arts safety. During a Parliamentary debate on combat sport safeguarding, the Minister for Sport, Stephanie Peacock MP, highlighted the Association by name for our role in supporting independent and unaffiliated martial arts clubs to adopt the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts, helping to set consistent standards across the sector.

Following that debate, BMABA received a direct letter of commendation from the Minister, acknowledging our efforts to improve safeguarding and recognising the importance of our work in protecting children and young people in martial arts. This recognition at the highest levels of Government demonstrates the influence of our grassroots movement, and underlines the trust placed in BMABA to help shape the future of safe martial arts practice in the UK.

“I appreciate your ongoing efforts to make martial arts safer for children.”

— Stephanie Peacock MP, Minister for Sport, Media, Civil Society and Youth

In her official response to BMABA, the Minister for Sport praised our work in raising safeguarding standards across the independent martial arts sector. She acknowledged our role in supporting unaffiliated clubs, described our input as “extremely useful” for Government policy development, and confirmed that our work will help inform the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s next steps in strengthening child safety in martial arts.

Built For The Sector - Not For Shareholders

BMABA wasn’t inherited or bought. It was built. And in 2025, we made the decision to give it away.

Our founder, who grew up in poverty and built BMABA from scratch with just £20, voluntarily converted the organisation into a regulated not-for-profit Community Interest Company, surrendering nearly £2 million in private value to protect its mission for the long term. That means no shareholders, no dividends and no profiteering, just a legal, permanent commitment to community impact.

We’re a registered social enterprise, governed by the CIC Regulator, certified to ISO 9001:2015 and 27001:2022 under UKAS accreditation, and led by a multi-award winning social entrepreneur who believes martial arts should serve the many, not the few.

This isn’t a badge of convenience or a business dressed up as a cause. It’s a movement, built for clubs, by clubs.

Nationally Recognised Standards

Our Club Colours and RegulationReady awards go far beyond branding or badges. They represent some of the most robust safeguarding and compliance standards available anywhere in UK martial arts.

Mapped directly against the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts (SCiMA) and formally approved by Sport England, our frameworks allow clubs to earn full SCiMA recognition directly through the MyBMABA platform, automatically and at no cost. We are the only independent martial arts body, and one of just two organisations nationwide alongside Sport England’s own NGBs, granted the authority to issue SCiMA certification in this way.

No waiting. No third-party submissions. No extra cost. Every BMABA member has access to this, included as part of our not-for-profit mission to raise standards from the ground up.

Others talk about safeguarding. We built a national infrastructure to deliver it.

Not Entirely Sure?

We offer a genuine 12 months of free membership, with no catches, no obligations and no hidden clauses.

Why? Because we believe you deserve to see first-hand what it feels like to be supported by an organisation that genuinely has your back. We know plenty of clubs have been let down before by associations that overpromised and underdelivered, so we’d rather show you than sell you.

Whether you’re looking for insurance, safeguarding help, student tools, guidance, structure, or simply a community that understands your club’s challenges, free membership gives you access to the same resources, platform and support we provide to thousands of instructors and clubs across the UK.

Take the full year. Explore everything. Then decide for yourself.

Raising Standards, Protecting Clubs

With RegulationReady and Club Colours, every BMABA club gains free access to the most advanced governance framework in martial arts: a gold-standard system built in-house, operated under our ISO 9001:2015 and 27001:2022 certified processes, and recognised nationally through SCiMA.
