Vetting, without
the paperwork.
Enhanced DBS checks for England and Wales, PVG applications for Scotland, completed fully online with government-approved digital identity verification and remote countersigning. Thousands completed, expert advice always on hand.
Why A Martial Arts DBS Matters
Your students trust you with their safety. Whether you work with children, vulnerable adults or general participants, demonstrating that your instructors and volunteers are thoroughly vetted is fundamental to running a professional club. DBS checks in England and Wales, and PVG checks in Scotland, are the backbone of that process, and BMABA has been providing them for more than half a decade, completing thousands to date. Every check we run is logged on our secure membership systems, feeding your club’s live compliance record through RegulationReady.

PVG, Scotland

You and any of your team completing a check will need to be a registered member of BMABA. A free affiliate membership is sufficient. Even at these prices we make a loss on every check we run, because vetting should never be the barrier to safeguarding done properly.
Fully Online, With Government-Approved Identity Verification
The old way meant printing forms, posting original documents and waiting for a countersignatory. Ours doesn’t. Applications run fully online using certified identity document validation technology under the UK government’s Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework, so your identity is verified remotely, applications are countersigned digitally, and nothing waits in a postbag. Most applicants complete their identity check from a phone in minutes, and Enhanced checks are typically back within 7 to 10 working days.
- Remote, government-approved identity verification
- Digital countersigning, no original documents posted
- Status logged automatically on your compliance record
Basic, Standard, Enhanced: What Actually Differs
Basic DBS Check
Shows unspent convictions only. Anyone can request one for any purpose, but it reveals nothing about cautions, spent convictions or barred list status, so it has no real safeguarding value for teaching roles.
Standard DBS Check
Shows spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings held on the Police National Computer, for eligible roles. Still no barred list check.
Enhanced DBS Check
Everything on a Standard check, plus relevant local police information, plus, critically, checks of the children’s and adults’ barred lists. This is the only level suitable for roles with direct contact with children or vulnerable adults, and it’s the level BMABA requires for all teaching, coaching and supervisory roles.
PVG, The Scottish Scheme
Scotland’s Protecting Vulnerable Groups scheme replaces the Enhanced DBS north of the border, with ongoing scheme membership rather than a point-in-time certificate. We arrange PVG applications for Scottish clubs at £92, fully online.
From September 2026, “Supervised” Is No Longer A Loophole
Safer recruitment legislation is tightening, and the direction is clear: from September 2026, Enhanced checks will be expected for everyone who comes into contact with children through a club role, not just those teaching unsupervised. The old comfort of “they only help out, and they’re always supervised” is going away, and clubs that wait for the deadline will find themselves vetting half their volunteer base in a rush.
Our advice is simple: get ahead of it now. Checks are inexpensive through us, they last, and every one strengthens the club’s safeguarding record through RegulationReady. Use the quick guide below for any role in your club, and remember it’s a guide, not formal advice: eligibility rules have edge cases, and our team is always happy to advise on a specific role.
Do You Need A Martial Arts DBS? Work It Through.
Answer three questions for any role in your club, yours or a team member’s, and get an indicative steer. Each question explains itself, because the terms carry specific meanings, and with the September 2026 rules only weeks away, we answer as if they already apply.
Do You Need A Martial Arts DBS? A Quick Guide.
Does the role involve a club where children or adults at risk train?
What does this mean?
“Children” means anyone under 18. “Adults at risk” means adults who may need care or support and could be unable to protect themselves from harm, defined under the Care Act 2014. If either group trains at the club, every role should be considered against vetting requirements.
Does the person come into contact with those children or adults at risk as part of the role, teaching, assisting, supervising, or regularly present at sessions?
What does this mean?
“Contact” is broader than teaching. Assisting on the mats, running the desk at sessions, helping with gradings, driving students, or simply being regularly present around juniors all count. Under the tightening rules, supervision by another adult no longer removes the need for a check.
Is that contact frequent or ongoing, rather than a genuine one-off?
What does this mean?
Frequency matters in eligibility law: roles performed regularly, historically framed as once a week or more, more than three days in a thirty-day period, or overnight, sit firmly within regulated activity. A genuine one-off means exactly that: a single occasion, not a recurring arrangement described casually.
This guide is indicative only and not comprehensive eligibility advice. Edge cases exist, and the DBS eligibility rules are detailed: when in doubt, ask our team.
And Remember: Instructors Hold A Position Of Trust
Since 2022, the law formally recognises sports coaches, martial arts instructors included, as holding a position of trust over the young people they coach. That means any sexual activity with a 16 or 17 year old in your coaching care is a criminal offence, exactly as it has long been for teachers and social workers, even though those young people are over the general age of consent. It reflects something clubs have always known: the instructor-student relationship carries real power, and with it real responsibility. Vetting, safeguarding training and clear club policies aren’t bureaucracy around that responsibility. They’re how you honour it.
Martial Arts DBS & PVG Checks, Every Question Answered
What exactly is a “Martial Arts DBS”?↗
It’s the same official Enhanced DBS check issued by the Disclosure and Barring Service as you’d receive in any other sector; there’s no special certificate type for martial arts. When we say Martial Arts DBS, we’re describing the purpose: a check requested because of your role in a club, whether teaching, coaching, assisting or supervising. The workforce and role details on the application reflect martial arts, but the certificate itself is the standard, nationally recognised Enhanced DBS.
I’ve heard the rules are changing. What’s happening in September 2026?↗
Safer recruitment legislation is tightening. From September 2026, the expectation moves from checking only those in unsupervised or regular teaching contact to requiring Enhanced checks for everyone who comes into contact with children through a club role, closing the supervision loophole that previously exempted some helpers and volunteers. If your club has anyone helping regularly who’s never been checked because they were “always supervised”, now is the time to get ahead of it. We’ll keep members updated as guidance is finalised, and our checker above gives a quick steer for any role.
What’s the difference between a DBS and a PVG check?↗
In England and Wales, safeguarding vetting is carried out through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). In Scotland, it’s managed through the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. Both systems serve the same purpose, ensuring unsuitable individuals are barred from working with children or vulnerable adults, but they run separately. The good news: we can arrange both. Enhanced DBS checks for England and Wales, and PVG scheme applications for our Scottish clubs at £92, all online.
Who actually needs a DBS or PVG check in martial arts?↗
If you’re teaching or supervising children or adults at risk, you’ll almost always need an Enhanced DBS check (or PVG in Scotland). That includes lead instructors, assistant instructors who help regularly, volunteers with ongoing unsupervised contact with juniors or vulnerable adults, and Designated Safeguarding Leads or Welfare Officers. If your role involves only occasional, supervised contact, a full Enhanced check may not be legally required, but safeguarding training and appropriate club policies still are. We recommend every club treats vetting as a core safeguarding standard, not a legal tick-box.
What’s the difference between Basic, Standard and Enhanced DBS checks?↗
A Basic check shows only unspent convictions, and anyone can request one for any purpose. A Standard check shows spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings held on the Police National Computer, for eligible roles. An Enhanced check is the most detailed level: everything on a Standard check plus any information held by local police considered relevant to the role, and, crucially, it can include a check of the children’s and adults’ barred lists. That barred list search is the only reliable safeguarding tool for roles with direct contact with children or vulnerable adults, which is why BMABA requires Enhanced checks with barred list searches for all teaching, coaching and supervisory roles.
How does the online identity check work?↗
We use government-approved digital identity verification, certified identity document validation technology operating under the UK’s Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework, to verify your identity remotely and countersign applications digitally. No printing, no posting original documents, no waiting for paper forms to crawl through the system. Most applicants complete identity verification from their phone in minutes.
How long does a DBS check take?↗
Most Enhanced DBS checks come back within 7 to 10 working days, though the DBS advises that checks can take up to 6 weeks in some circumstances, for example where multiple police forces need to be contacted. Turnaround is controlled entirely by the DBS, not by BMABA or our umbrella provider, so individual cases can’t be expedited.
What is the DBS Update Service, and should I join it?↗
The Update Service keeps your Enhanced certificate current: employers and organisations can check your status online instead of you reapplying every few years. It costs £16 per year for paid roles, paid directly to the DBS, and it’s free for volunteers. We strongly recommend joining when you apply, since it saves both money and time in the long run, and BMABA can verify your status online at any point.
Is there a difference between volunteer and paid checks?↗
Yes. The government charges no fee for volunteer Enhanced DBS checks but does charge for checks linked to paid work (£49.50 from December 2024). All applications must also go through a registered umbrella body, whose admin fee we pass on, and BMABA incurs processing costs to run and log each check. Even with these charges we make a loss on every DBS check we run, to keep costs as low as possible for members: £25 for volunteers, £65 for paid roles, all-in.
What about Scotland and Northern Ireland?↗
In Scotland, the PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme replaces Enhanced DBS checks, and we can arrange PVG applications for our Scottish clubs at £92, fully online. In Northern Ireland, vetting runs through AccessNI, which is separate again: we can’t process AccessNI checks directly, but we’ll advise you on requirements and point you to the correct body.
What ID or evidence do I need?↗
The DBS requires documents confirming your identity, address and right to work: typically a current passport or driving licence, a birth certificate, and a recent utility bill or bank statement issued within the last three months. The exact combination depends on what you hold, and because our identity verification is digital, you’ll usually just photograph documents rather than posting originals. We guide you through it as part of your application.

Georgina E Really impressive, 21st century MA organisation. 10/10Found these guys in Martial Arts Illustrated doing a piece on professionalism in martial arts and thought, as an instructor, they might be worth looking at further. Jonathan D BMABA – the Martial Arts Association you NEEDI joined the BMABA right in its infancy (I believe I was their second member!). Giovanni is the most helpful, respectful and genuine person who has turned the possibility of a non-political, highly respected and supportive Martial Arts Association into a reality. I could bang on for hours about the BMABA but don't take my word for it – go and visit the BMABA website and see for yourself.
