Martial Arts To Resume: Saturday 25th July

For those within the martial arts industry who did the responsible thing and sat tight following June’s crushing extension to the continued closure of indoor sport and gyms, we finally appear to have our date!

What’s Happened?

ENGLAND

On 9th July at 17:12 Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport reported that gyms and leisure centres in England can resume indoor training from Saturday 25th July. All the initial guidance and indications appear to fully support martial arts being included within this category.

This finally lifts the prohibition of indoor sport and recreation, and green-lights martial arts clubs and classes to return to their indoor training at all permitted venues. This will now not only include venues like village halls and social clubs, but also now gyms and leisure centres.

SCOTLAND

Scotland also moves to start relaxing lockdown measures as the risk assessment from Covid lowers further. In Scotland there is still no set date for the opening of indoor gyms, but increased groups being able to meet, socially distanced, gives hope to the resuming of martial arts clubs in Scotland as soon as possible – likely before the new school term.

WALES & NORTHERN IRELAND

Changes in Wales and Northern Ireland continue to evolve but are following separate timelines, and are not necessarily following England’s resumption date. We will continue to monitor closely, and update our members accordingly.

What Next?

We finally have our resume date – 25th July. This is clearly excellent news and whilst it’s cause to celebrate today, there lies alot of work ahead of us tomorrow. Clubs across the UK now need to move to ensure they can teach socially distanced classes safely and professionally. We know from Oliver Dowden’s press release this evening that this will include enhanced cleaning, pre-booking, limited capacity, reduced classes and other stringent control measures. Whether you agree with this or not, we all have a moral and professional obligation to follow the guidance closely to ensure the right to return is not taken from us again.

What About Contact Training & Grappling?

For the time being social distancing would appear to be essential. There is some talk of ‘bubbles’ being used by children of certain ages in after school clubs and holiday camps, but without a nuanced and carefully assessed guidance, it’s safe to assume the standard social distancing rules must be maintained.

What About Equipment Use?

The use of equipment should be strictly limited. Any equipment used must be kept exclusively to the same student throughout the session and carefully cleaned after use. In theory, pads and other kicking shields might be permitted but this will vary hugely from club to club, and the guidance is still (at the time of writing) less than 15 minutes old, so we’ll need to review and reflect the specific guidance as it emerges.

How Can I Resume Classes Safely?

Specific guidance will be provided by the DCMS over the coming weeks. We know this will almost certainly not cover martial arts specifically, but it will cover both gyms and sports classes and we can use this (as an industry) to guide our martial arts classes appropriately.

In the interim, it’s never been more important to ensure your club is Covid-Aware. As an association, we provide completely free Covid-Aware instructor qualifications and a whole suite of completely free Covid-Tools to help our clubs resume safely.

We’re already aware of numerous pieces of guidance from Government relating to the re-opening of indoor sport and recreation spaces that will need to be properly considered by martial arts clubs. This is especially the case if you run your own venue or facility. We’re working through this guidance now to understand how it impacts our industry and your classes, and to understand what is legislation and what is guidance. We will continue to report on this over the coming days.

We have the UK martial arts industry's most comprehensive support package to help clubs safely return from lockdown.

Everything from Covid-Aware qualifications and training through to risk assessments, latest guidance, liaison services, marketing material and more. All completely free.

We have a huge range of Coronavirus Support services openly available to clubs and instructors from across the UK. You can join us for free for 6 months to access all of our Covid Recovery Toolkit resources, and we have a number of enhanced memberships – all heavily discounted and subsidised – to help those who need insurance and other key provisions as well.

This ensures your work and your students’ grades remain nationally ratified whilst allowing you as a club the largest amount of possible space to deviate from the ‘norm’ to help you through these challenging times.

Insurance & Safeguarding Guidance

Making sure you still have the correct insurance provisions and – above all else – ensuring safeguarding obligations are not detrimentally impacted – remains critical. We automatically upgrade and pay for any additions to insurance to ensure our members whom use us for insurance can teach online (pre-recorded and live) and outdoors, as well as in-club (where permitted) and be sure insurance is still effective. Our safeguarding guidance will assist clubs in understanding obligations and adapting their policies too.

A National, Regulated, Award-Winning Not-For-Profit - Built From The Ground Up

BMABA CIC isn’t just another organisation claiming to serve martial arts — we’re a regulated, independently audited, multi-award-winning social enterprise leading from the front.

We hold ISO9001:2015 certification under UKAS accreditation — the same gold standard used to assess hospitals, universities, and major corporations. We’re also regulated by the Office of the Regulator of Community Interest Companies (CIC Regulator), meaning we’re legally bound to reinvest every penny back into grassroots martial arts.

We haven’t been propped up by corporate sponsors or legacy funding. We’ve grown organically — one instructor at a time, by doing what we said we’d do and showing up when others didn’t. Since 2012, we’ve supported clubs through hardship, driven national reforms, and built a respected, professional home for independent martial arts.

Today, we’re trusted by more than 6,500 instructors and clubs and support over 100,000 members across 140+ disciplines. Along the way, we’ve earned national recognition — from awards in governance and inclusion, to features across BBC, ITV, and The Guardian.

We didn’t inherit status. We earned it — by raising the bar, and never compromising on our values.

Empower Your Club With A Platform That Works For You

Run your martial arts club smarter with our full-featured, professionally-built Club Management Platform — funded entirely by our not-for-profit mission, not a corporate agenda. No upsells. No hidden costs. Just powerful, intuitive tools included free with your membership.

Why Do Thousands Choose BMABA?

Not everyone understands what makes us different. But for those who do, the reasons are clear — from our award-winning governance to the groundbreaking support we offer clubs of all sizes.

Whether it’s our industry-leading safeguarding standards, our not-for-profit mission, or our powerful club tech funded purely by membership — there’s a reason more than 6,500 instructors and 3,500 clubs trust us.

Built For The Sector — Not For Shareholders

BMABA wasn’t inherited or bought — it was built. And in 2025, we made the bold decision to give it away.

Our founder, who grew up in poverty and built BMABA from scratch with just £20, voluntarily converted the organisation into a regulated not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) — surrendering nearly £2 million in private value to protect its mission for the long term. That means no for profit shareholders, no dividends, and no profiteering — just an unwavering commitment to community impact.

We’re a registered social enterprise, governed by the CIC Regulator, certified to ISO9001:2015 under UKAS accreditation, and led by a multi-award winning social entrepreneur who believes martial arts should serve the people, not the few.

This isn’t a vanity project with self-appointed 8th dans — it’s a movement, built for clubs, by clubs.

Nationally Recognised Standards

Our Club Colours and Regulation Ready awards go far beyond branding or badges — they represent some of the most robust safeguarding and compliance standards available anywhere in UK martial arts.

Mapped directly against the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts (SCiMA) and formally approved by Sport England, our frameworks allow clubs to earn full SCiMA recognition directly through the MyBMABA platform — automatically and at no cost. We are the only independent governing body, and one of just two organisations nationwide, including Sport England’s own NGBs, granted the authority to issue SCiMA certification in this way.

No waiting. No third-party submission. No extra cost. Every BMABA member has access to this, included as part of our not-for-profit mission to raise standards from the ground up.

Others talk about safeguarding. We built a national infrastructure to deliver it.

Not Entirely Sure?

We offer a genuine 12 months of free membership — with absolutely no catches, obligations, or hidden clauses.

Why? Because we believe you deserve the chance to see, first-hand, what it feels like to be supported by an organisation that genuinely has your back. We know how often martial arts clubs have been let down by associations and governing bodies that overpromise and underdeliver — or worse, treat instructors as revenue, not people.

We’re not here to sell you on hype. We’re here to show you what real, modern martial arts governance and support can look like.

Whether you’re looking for insurance, safeguarding help, student tools, guidance, structure, or just a community that understands your club’s challenges — our free membership gives you access to the same resources, platform, and support we provide to thousands of instructors and clubs across the UK.

No commitment. No pressure. Just a genuine opportunity to explore what we offer — and decide for yourself.
