Powerful Tools For Event Organisers

The BMABA Event Manager provides a complete toolkit for planning, managing and licensing martial arts events. From early planning through to event day oversight, everything is organised in one platform designed specifically for combat sports.
What types of events can BMABA license and insure?

BMABA can license a wide range of martial arts events, including:

• Interclub competitions
• Tournaments and championships
• Fight nights and full contact competitions
• Demonstrations and exhibitions
• Open mats, randori sessions and sparring events
• Grading events that include competitive elements

Events must complete the BMABA Event Ready safety and compliance checklist before licensing is approved. Once licensed, public liability cover is activated under the BMABA insurance programme.

Is the insurance available for both non-contact and full contact events?

Yes.

BMABA can license and provide event cover for both non-contact and full contact martial arts events.

Full contact events require additional oversight to ensure appropriate safety standards are in place, including medical provision, officiating standards and risk management controls. These requirements are verified through the Event Ready compliance framework before cover is activated.

Does the cover protect competitors or just the organisers?

Event public liability insurance protects the event organiser against claims arising from injury or property damage connected to the event.

Participants are expected to hold appropriate martial arts insurance for their own training and competition activities.

BMABA licensed students are already insured through their student membership. If non-BMABA participants attend, they can be declared through the event system so temporary cover can be arranged through the BMABA insurance programme.

What safety requirements do I need to meet for the cover to be valid?

All BMABA licensed events must complete the Event Ready compliance checklist.

This includes confirming:

• Appropriate safeguarding arrangements
• Qualified officials and referees
• Suitable medical provision for the level of contact
• Venue suitability and risk management
• Participant registration and declarations
• Compliance with relevant martial arts safety standards

The Event Ready framework guides organisers through these requirements step by step using the event management platform.

How quickly can I arrange event cover?

In most cases, cover can be arranged as soon as the Event Ready checklist has been completed and your event has been submitted through the BMABA event platform.

Once approved, your event licence is issued and public liability cover becomes active for the event.

You can activate event licences automatically and immediately online 24/7, however the compliance items may take longer for you to put into place.

Do I need to notify BMABA in advance of my event?

Yes.

Events must be registered through the Event Ready platform before they take place. This ensures the event meets the required safety standards and allows the event to be properly licensed under the BMABA insurance programme.

Registering your event early also allows time to review safety arrangements and ensure all compliance requirements are met.

What documentation do I receive once my event is licensed?

Once approved, your event receives:

• A BMABA Event Ready licence confirmation
• Proof of public liability cover for the event
• A digital Event Ready certification badge for promotion
• Event records stored within the BMABA platform

This documentation can be used to demonstrate that your event has been reviewed and licensed under the BMABA event framework.

Is there an excess payable on claims?

All insurance policies include an excess, which is the amount payable in the event of a claim before the insurer contributes.

The applicable excess is determined by the insurance policy in place at the time of the event. Organisers should refer to the policy documentation or contact BMABA if they require clarification.

Can BMABA help me plan a safe event, or is it just insurance?

BMABA provides far more than insurance.

Members receive access to the full Event Ready platform, which includes:

• Event planning checklists
• Risk and compliance guidance
• Event management tools
• Best practice resources
• Marketing and promotion guidance
• Event viability calculators

The platform is designed to help clubs plan, manage and deliver safe and professional martial arts events.

Why choose BMABA instead of a commercial event insurer?

Most commercial event insurers simply provide an insurance policy.

BMABA takes a different approach.

Alongside event public liability cover, members receive access to a complete event management and safety framework designed specifically for martial arts.

This includes licensing, compliance guidance, planning tools and organiser support. The result is not just insured events, but better organised and safer martial arts competitions.

Do I have to use the BMABA event platform to get insurance?

Organisers can plan their event however they wish. However, events must complete the BMABA Event Ready compliance checklist in order to receive licensing and activate insurance cover.

The platform is provided to make this process simple and to help clubs manage registrations, compliance and planning in one place.

You’ll need to use the Event Ready system to activate cover, but you don’t need to use the other tools such as task management or rulebook setup.

What if competitors are not BMABA members?

Events can still include competitors from outside BMABA clubs.

Non-members must be declared through the event platform so temporary cover can be arranged through the BMABA insurance programme. A small per-participant declaration fee applies.

Many organisers use this as an opportunity to introduce visiting competitors to BMABA student membership.

Can I use the platform without the insurance?

Yes, of course. There’s no obligation to activate our event cover if you don’t want to. You can still use the event management platform to plan and manage your event, even if you don’t intend to licence and insure through us.

A National, Regulated, Award-Winning Not-For-Profit - Built From The Ground Up

BMABA CIC isn’t just another organisation claiming to serve martial arts — we’re a regulated, independently audited, multi-award-winning social enterprise leading from the front.

We hold ISO9001:2015 certification under UKAS accreditation — the same gold standard used to assess hospitals, universities, and major corporations. We’re also regulated by the Office of the Regulator of Community Interest Companies (CIC Regulator), meaning we’re legally bound to reinvest every penny back into grassroots martial arts.

We haven’t been propped up by corporate sponsors or legacy funding. We’ve grown organically — one instructor at a time, by doing what we said we’d do and showing up when others didn’t. Since 2012, we’ve supported clubs through hardship, driven national reforms, and built a respected, professional home for independent martial arts.

Today, we’re trusted by more than 6,500 instructors and clubs and support over 100,000 members across 140+ disciplines. Along the way, we’ve earned national recognition — from awards in governance and inclusion, to features across BBC, ITV, and The Guardian.

We didn’t inherit status. We earned it — by raising the bar, and never compromising on our values.

HOW MUCH COULD YOUR CLUB SAVE?

Cut costs. Simplify your club. Invest back into what matters.

Our membership model is simple. By consolidating essential services and tools they already need, many clubs save more than the cost of their membership alone. No hidden upgrades, no shareholder profit, just practical support delivered by a regulated, audited social enterprise.

Not everyone understands what makes us different. But for those who do, the reasons are clear — from our award-winning governance to the groundbreaking support we offer clubs of all sizes.

Whether it’s our industry-leading safeguarding standards, our not-for-profit mission, or our powerful club tech funded purely by membership — there’s a reason more than 6,500 instructors and 3,500 clubs trust us.

— Stephanie Peacock MP, House of Commons Debate on Combat Sport Safety

"Organisations such as the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association support unaffiliated martial arts providers to adopt the safeguarding code… Providers with recognition under the code can display a logo on their promotional materials to show participants that their safety measures have been vetted.”

A VOICE FOR INDEPENDENT MARTIAL ARTS

Ministerial Commendation and Parliamentary Recognition

BMABA CIC has been formally recognised in the House of Commons as a leading voice on martial arts safety. During a Parliamentary debate on combat sport safeguarding, the Minister for Sport, Stephanie Peacock MP, highlighted the Association by name for our role in supporting independent and unaffiliated martial arts clubs to adopt the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts, helping to set consistent standards across the sector.

Following that debate, BMABA received a direct letter of commendation from the Minister, acknowledging our efforts to improve safeguarding and recognising the importance of our work in protecting children and young people in martial arts. This recognition at the highest levels of Government demonstrates the influence of our grassroots movement, and underlines the trust placed in BMABA to help shape the future of safe martial arts practice in the UK.

“I appreciate your ongoing efforts to make martial arts safer for children.”

— Stephanie Peacock MP, Minister for Sport, Media, Civil Society and Youth

In her official response to BMABA, the Minister for Sport praised our work in raising safeguarding standards across the independent martial arts sector. She acknowledged our role in supporting unaffiliated clubs, described our input as “extremely useful” for Government policy development, and confirmed that our work will help inform the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s next steps in strengthening child safety in martial arts.

Built For The Sector — Not For Shareholders

BMABA wasn’t inherited or bought — it was built. And in 2025, we made the bold decision to give it away.

Our founder, who grew up in poverty and built BMABA from scratch with just £20, voluntarily converted the organisation into a regulated not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) — surrendering nearly £2 million in private value to protect its mission for the long term. That means no for profit shareholders, no dividends, and no profiteering — just an unwavering commitment to community impact.

We’re a registered social enterprise, governed by the CIC Regulator, certified to ISO9001:2015 under UKAS accreditation, and led by a multi-award winning social entrepreneur who believes martial arts should serve the people, not the few.

This isn’t a vanity project with self-appointed 8th dans — it’s a movement, built for clubs, by clubs.

Build or Transfer Your Club Website - For Free

Whether you already have a website or are starting from scratch, we can take care of it for you. Our team can migrate your existing site or build a clean, professional new one designed around how your club actually operates, fully aligned with BMABA systems and standards.

Your website is built to do more than just look good. It can support online payments, club shops, enquiries and member journeys, while connecting seamlessly with club management, business tools and secure email. You also get direct one to one support from our developers to make sure everything is set up properly and works the way you need it to. All of this is included as part of your membership, with no extra charges.

Nationally Recognised Standards

Our Club Colours and Regulation Ready awards go far beyond branding or badges — they represent some of the most robust safeguarding and compliance standards available anywhere in UK martial arts.

Mapped directly against the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts (SCiMA) and formally approved by Sport England, our frameworks allow clubs to earn full SCiMA recognition directly through the MyBMABA platform — automatically and at no cost. We are the only independent governing body, and one of just two organisations nationwide, including Sport England’s own NGBs, granted the authority to issue SCiMA certification in this way.

No waiting. No third-party submission. No extra cost. Every BMABA member has access to this, included as part of our not-for-profit mission to raise standards from the ground up.

Others talk about safeguarding. We built a national infrastructure to deliver it.

Not Entirely Sure?

We offer a genuine 12 months of free membership — with absolutely no catches, obligations, or hidden clauses.

Why? Because we believe you deserve the chance to see, first-hand, what it feels like to be supported by an organisation that genuinely has your back. We know how often martial arts clubs have been let down by associations and governing bodies that overpromise and underdeliver — or worse, treat instructors as revenue, not people.

We’re not here to sell you on hype. We’re here to show you what real, modern martial arts governance and support can look like.

Whether you’re looking for insurance, safeguarding help, student tools, guidance, structure, or just a community that understands your club’s challenges — our free membership gives you access to the same resources, platform, and support we provide to thousands of instructors and clubs across the UK.

No commitment. No pressure. Just a genuine opportunity to explore what we offer — and decide for yourself.

Raising Standards, Protecting Clubs

With Regulation Ready and Club Colours, every BMABA club gains free access to the most advanced governance framework in martial arts — a gold-standard system built in-house, verified against ISO 9001:2015, and recognised nationally through SCiMA.

This isn’t theory; it’s a living, breathing platform. Your policies, safeguarding, leadership and compliance are dynamically checked in real-time, giving you instant certification, public recognition, and complete transparency. No other martial arts body offers anything this comprehensive — and with BMABA CIC, it’s included free for every member, because raising standards and protecting grassroots clubs is what we do.
